It was ethnic nationalism. Delivered in a blowout. On satellite radio. To an audience that ate it like communion.

The Supreme Court had just ruled 6-3 that the Trump administration could strip Temporary Protected Status from hundreds of thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants, people who came here legally, under a legal framework, in response to catastrophes they did not cause. An earthquake that killed 100,000 people. A civil war that turned a country into rubble. The United States government looked at those realities and said: we will not send you back into that. That was the promise. That was the law.

Megyn Kelly looked at all of it and said: cry me a river.

Then she said this:

“Go home. Get out. We know our country is better than yours. That’s because we filled it with our work ethic and our culture and our values. You being here only dilutes it for us, those who built it and live it. And half of you people, more than half of you, won’t assimilate. We don’t want you. We don’t care if you’re offended. Get out. Go home. Go back to fucking Haiti.”

Read that again. Don’t look away. Don’t let the familiarity of this kind of talk sand down the edges until it feels normal. Read it one more time and understand what it is: a woman who gets paid to talk telling an entire ethnic group that their presence on American soil is a contamination. A dilution. An offense against the people who built this.

Who built it, Megyn? Who the hell built it?

Here’s the thing we need to say out loud, the thing that’s more disturbing than Megyn Kelly’s rant, the thing that explains why she did it and will keep doing it and will never stop:

She has an audience.

Millions of Americans heard those words and nodded. Millions of Americans have been waiting for someone with a big enough microphone to say exactly that, with exactly that contempt, with exactly that certainty. Megyn Kelly is not simply a lunatic with a podcast. She is a businesswoman who has correctly identified her customer base and is giving them the product they want.

This is the part that should keep you up at night. Not Megyn Kelly specifically. Megyn Kelly is a symptom. The disease is the tens of millions of Americans who hear “go back to fucking Haiti” and feel, for the first time all day, something like relief. Like finally someone said it.

She learned this from Ann Coulter, who learned it from Pat Buchanan, who learned it from George Wallace, who learned it from everyone who came before him in the long and profitable American tradition of turning ethnic hatred into a career. The formula has never changed: find the fear, name an enemy, monetize the contempt. Coulter did it with books. Kelly does it with a podcast and a Sirius XM contract. The delivery system evolves. The product is identical.

Coulter spent thirty years calling immigrants criminals, calling Muslims terrorists, calling liberals traitors, and she sold millions of books doing it. She built a brand on the fact that a significant portion of America wants to hear that the people they fear and resent are actually as bad as they think, that their contempt is justified, that someone smart and credentialed and telegenic agrees with them. Megyn Kelly looked at that business model and said: I can do that. I have the hair for it.

Arguably, she’s never been more popular. Her numbers are up. Her audience is engaged. Every time she goes further, every time she crosses a line that used to mean something, the clips go viral and the subscribers roll in and the Sirius XM contract gets a little more secure.

This is what hate sounds like when it has a distribution deal.

Because here is what “our culture, our values, our work ethic” has always meant in American political history, and it has never once meant what the person saying it thinks it means. It meant the Irish weren’t welcome. It meant Italians were lynched in New Orleans. It meant the Chinese built the railroads and then got a law named after them that said they couldn’t stay. It meant Jewish refugees fleeing Nazi Germany were turned away at the border because they didn’t fit the culture. It meant Japanese Americans got put in camps while their sons died fighting for the flag flying over those camps.

Every single generation of this country has produced a Megyn Kelly. Someone polished enough to say the ugly thing in complete sentences. Someone with enough institutional credibility to make the ugliness sound like analysis. Someone who has fully absorbed the benefits of every wave of immigration that came before her and is now, from her perch, her platform, her studio, pulling up the ladder and calling it patriotism.

Her parents are Irish and Italian. Two immigrant groups who were told, within living memory, that they would never assimilate. That they were too Catholic. Too foreign. Too Irish. That they diluted what real Americans had built.

The door she walked through she is now trying to brick up from the inside.

That’s not a political position. That’s a confession. And it’s a profitable one.

While Megyn Kelly was on the radio telling Haitian immigrants to get the fuck out, real families were sitting with a real question: what happens to us now?

Not a hypothetical. Not a policy debate. A mother who has been here for fourteen years, whose kids were born here, whose taxes have been filed here, whose church is here, whose whole life is here, sitting with the Supreme Court ruling open on her phone trying to understand how temporary became permanent became temporary again based on who won an election.

A father who came here after the earthquake because there was nothing left to come back to. Who rebuilt. Who stayed. Who did every single thing the system asked of him. Now being told by six justices and one radio host that “temporary” means whatever we need it to mean today, and what we need it to mean today is get out.

Megyn Kelly does not think about those people. She thinks about the clip. She thinks about the share. She thinks about going viral on a day the Supreme Court handed her a news hook and she delivered, thirty seconds of pure ethnic contempt dressed up in the language of assimilation and work ethic and “we built this.” Consumable. Shareable. Deniable if necessary.

She’s not stupid. She knows exactly what she’s selling and exactly who’s buying.

Justice Elena Kagan said it from the bench, in a Supreme Court dissent, for the permanent record, that the president of the United States has called Haiti a “shithole country,” said Haitians “probably have AIDS,” and spread debunked myths about immigrants eating pets. She named it. She put it in writing. She said this is the context in which this ruling exists.

Megyn Kelly’s response was to confirm the context. To amplify it. To monetize it.

This is the ecosystem now. The Supreme Court dismantles the legal protection. The radio host provides the moral framework. The audience nods along, feeling seen, feeling validated, feeling the warm comfort of having their worst instincts confirmed by someone with credentials and a microphone. The families pack their bags or go underground or sit in church on Sunday wondering if ICE is in the parking lot.

And Megyn Kelly goes home to her studio and her contract and her audience that loves her for finally saying what they’ve been thinking, and she does not lose a night of sleep, and she does not think about the mother, and she does not think about the father, and she does not think about the kids who were born here and have never seen Haiti and are now being told their parents’ presence was always temporary, always conditional, always subject to revision by people who have decided that some lives dilute the rest of us.

Here is the truth that makes all of this worse: Megyn Kelly is not an outlier. She is a mirror. She reflects something real about this country, something that has always been here, something that gets louder every time the courts hand it a victory. The hatred is not new. The cruelty is not new. The willingness to look at a family being torn apart and feel not grief but satisfaction, that is not new.

What’s new is the infrastructure. The podcast. The satellite radio deal. The algorithm that rewards the clip. The business model that turns ethnic contempt into subscriber growth. Ann Coulter built the template. Kelly perfected the delivery. And somewhere right now, someone younger is watching Kelly’s numbers and taking notes.

The market for this has never dried up. It just keeps finding new spokespeople. New faces. New ways to say the same thing that has been said about every immigrant group that ever came to this country: you dilute us. You don’t belong. Go back to where you came from.

Megyn Kelly said it to Haitians on June 25, 2026, the day the Supreme Court made it legal policy.

She found her permission slip.

Six justices signed it.

She cashed it immediately.

On June 30th, 2026, Tennessee ends that. The medical records of dying children get forwarded to immigration authorities. The appointments that kept them alive become the evidence. The program becomes the trap.

You did this.

Not Stephen Miller. Not Cameron Sexton. Not Bill Lee, though he picked up a pen on May 22nd and signed ninety years away like he was approving a parking variance.

You. Hat. Flag. Lever. Righteousness. You did this to a ten-year-old boy in a wheelchair in Nashville who has lived in this country since he was three years old and whose name his mother is too terrified to give to a reporter because the government you built is hunting him.

His name is not in this piece. His mother’s name is not in this piece. You know why. You made it dangerous to have a name. You made it dangerous to be a child with spina bifida who needs a doctor every month just to stay alive. His medical records are a wanted poster. His appointments are breadcrumbs leading to a door you want kicked in.

Your vote did that. Your silence did that. Your smug share of the post about illegals taking your country did that.

Bill Lee and Cameron Sexton flew to Washington. Sat in rooms with Stephen Miller and the Justice Department. Built the machine together. Called Tennessee a test case. A model for the nation. A deputy speaker named Jason Zachary said it out loud on video: “We are being told Tennessee will go first.”

First. They were proud to go first.

First at turning a children’s cancer program into an ICE referral list. First at threatening nurses with criminal prosecution if they don’t report their dying patients. First at mailing letters on official letterhead to the mothers of children on ventilators telling them the clock is running.

The boy’s mother spoke to a reporter. She wouldn’t say his name. Not one syllable. That is the world you made. She was crying when she said it. “If we go back, he’s not going to make it.”

That’s it. That’s what you did. In that one sentence from a woman too afraid to say her son’s name. Crying. Knowing what’s coming.

He was three years old when they got here. Three. He is ten now. He has spent more than two thirds of his life in this country. He did not choose to come here. He cannot survive without help. He will die without care. You looked at all of that and decided the paperwork was the issue.

You decided your feelings about the border were worth more than his heartbeat.

Expendable. Not illegal. Expendable. A child sacrificed so you could feel like the country belongs to you again. His death, when it comes, will happen quietly. Off camera. In Honduras maybe. Or perhaps in a detention facility. Somewhere you’ll never have to see. Somewhere you can pretend you didn’t cause.

You caused it.

You own June 30th. You own every appointment this boy misses. You own every night his mother lies awake calculating which kills her son faster — the disease or the government.

When he dies — not if, when — you won’t hear about it. It won’t trend. It won’t interrupt your programming. It will happen in the dark the way expendable people die in the America you made and you will feel nothing and Cameron Sexton will still be cashing his checks and Stephen Miller will still be in his office and the machine will already be looking for the next child.

That child exists right now. In Tennessee. In a wheelchair, or on a ventilator, or in chemotherapy. Right now. Alive. Running out of time.

You did that.

Own it.

The resistance against ICE in Los Angeles has been going stronger than the majority of cities in the United States.

Since June 6th of last year, they’ve put constant daily pressure on ICE and the Los Angeles Metropolitan Detention Center, the concentration camp in the heart of downtown LA.

Owl Media’s own traveled to the city of angels this June 6th to bear witness to the anniversary protest through his singular lens. Picked up by founder Carlos Álvarez-Aranyos with a couple of gas masks in tow, they headed downtown to meet up with the crew that has been holding it down outside the concentration camp for a year.

Organizer and fellow Antifa comrade, Toby (aka Resistdacoup on Instagram) is one of the heads of the constant presence outside MDC.

I spoke to Toby about the June 6th protest and what one year of resistance looks like.

“For the past year we have made sure that we had a 24 hour presence,” Toby said. “The people made a decision back then that we would occupy the detention center and never let up. I can’t imagine that we all thought a year would go by and we would still be doing this.”

But as ICE’s reign of terror has grown across the country, people fighting against it is of the utmost necessity, now more than ever.

LA definitely knows how to show up and show out. For the one-year anniversary of fighting against the presence of a concentration camp and a private military with unprecedented budget that kidnaps innocent people and has murdered civilians on the street with impunity, that’s exactly what LA did.

With Chelsea Gods. With Robby Roadsteamer. With a firetruck parked in the middle of the street.

“Robby comes up to me,” Toby told me. “and whispers in my ear: I got a fire truck.”

That gave me a nice laugh and an inquiry on how Robby made that happen. But I should know better than to ask, because when Robby has a vision for something he reaches out to the universe and the universe obliges.

“I still never even asked him where he got it from exactly,” Toby continued. “but that thing pulled up and was absolutely the perfect stage. It made a huge impact and was beautiful. The city even tried to impound it at one point but we all surrounded it and the truck driver was able to get it out of there somehow.”

And what a sight to behold. Because whose side would you rather want to be on? The one where rockstars who are fighting for human rights speak to truth and power on the top of a firetruck or the side of the modern day Gestapo armed to the teeth with less-than-lethal rounds and chemical weapons that would be a violation of the Geneva conventions if used in war, but in America, a staple when dealing with its own civilians.

A whole lot of righteous protestors against a gaggle of impotent ICE and DHS agents.

And as always - from their inability to handle the pressure - ICE, DHS, and the local law enforcement that protects them escalated with violence. Not caring to distinguish between protesters and press, they target anyone in the vicinity who has the audacity to question or even document their fragile authority.

In the midst of it, ended up getting sprayed with bear mace by a DHS agent while capturing images of their escalation.

It took him out of commission for a little, but after the effects wore off, he went right back to documenting the moment. Because that’s what does.

And this is what we’ve experienced every time we’ve covered ICE and the concentration camps they operate. While they keep innocent people inside in inhumane conditions, the inhumanity continues out on the street. A constant brutalizing of protesters and press in egregious violations of first amendment rights.

“They knew we were coming,” Toby said. “They looked a little surprised and definitely were rattled during the speeches (on the firetruck). I think that day they got a huge idea of the power we have. Even the LAPD came and we were able to swarm them and push them back.”

It’s an inspiring display. Something that could be repeated everywhere. After being at Delaney Hall and seeing the dichotomy of the crowd dying down each day with the absolute riot that happened just over the bridge after the Knicks won in NYC, it’s clear that American’s have their priorities all wrong.

If people have the will and the numbers they can push back ICE and the police that protect them and keep them from brutalizing protesters and infringing on first amendment rights.

If people show out with numbers then we have the opportunity to actual shut these concentration camps down.

Instead of crowds dwindling down from the escalation of fascists, we need the opposite response. We need the LA response or the Minneapolis response. We need constant pressure. We need shock and awe.

ICE’s concentration camps are all over this country, filled with innocent people. Some of them have families with children and even babies detained inside in inhumane conditions. All for the profit of private corporations.

There’s no reason there shouldn’t be a mass sustained presence of protestors outside every single one of them every single day.

We destroyed the grass on the National Mall. Deliberately. With forethought. In one night. We are coming forward because we have watched you deploy the full investigative resources of the Federal Bureau of Investigation onto a lawn and we cannot let that continue. You have grass samples in a federal laboratory right now being analyzed by agents whose career ambitions almost certainly did not include Agrostology.

This is our confession.

We did it. We were responsible.

We’re telling you so you can tell those agents they can go home now.

Tell them you cracked the case if you want to. Tell them whatever will help bring closure to this investigation.

If any of the agents are cynical or simply can’t take your word for it, please feel free to share this letter with them so they can understand exactly what happened.

There were proposals.

At first, we considered herbicide, but quickly decided against that. We talked about using salt. Someone else suggested Vinegar. We had a conversation about goats that lasted nearly fifteen minutes.

It was late. The coffee was bad. And then, Sebastian spoke.

We are giving you his first name only, because his last name is none of your fucking business, but also because Sebastian doesn't want anybody else to take the heat.

“What if we use worms?” Sebastian suggested.

“Ugly Fuck Worms,” he continued. “They’re ugly. They’re effective. They drain the life force out of everything they come into conract with.”

None of us had a clue what an Ugly Fuck Worm was. Sebastian explained it to us in a level of detail that raised other uncomfortable questions we chose not to ask because it was late and we were desperate.

We listened. We took notes.

No one had any questions or objections.

We sent Sebastian to get the worms. He knows people.

And that, Kash, is precisely how we planned it.

If we had it to do all over again, we would probably do some things differently. I say this because we all learned some important things that night.

We learned that the Ugly Fuck Worm has two distinguishing characteristics: an aggressive appetite for grass root systems, and a face that looks like Stephen Miller. Not metaphorically. Literally. Pale, joyless, hairless, wearing an expression of bureaucratic contempt so specific that the first time we saw one we had to sit down.

Here is the part your forensic specialists cannot figure out and we are now going to explain for free:

The Ugly Fuck Worm does not eat grass. It drains it. It sucks the life force out of everything it comes into contact with, not through venom, not through chemicals, not through any mechanism your instruments have a setting for, but through proximity alone. Through presence. Through the sustained application of that face to any living thing within range.

The grass did not die, Kash.

The grass was emptied.

Your specialists are going to find perfectly viable grass cells, structurally intact, biologically complete, yet entirely devoid of whatever it is that makes grass want to be alive. They have seen that face. They have made their choice. You cannot blame them. You would do the same. We all would.

Your forensic specialists are not analyzing a crime scene.

They are analyzing an ecological event.

It was not only the grass.

People in our group reported sudden inexplicable exhaustion. A heaviness. A feeling of being watched by something that finds them deeply disappointing. Sebastian almost fainted. He sat down on a bench and stared at the middle distance for forty minutes. He was fine. Eventually. But something had gone out of him and everyone who knows him has taken notice.

We went through more than two thousand worms. We tried to use stencils. We only had a few hours to execute our plan.

The eight was immaculate. Worms are instinctively circular. They saw the eight and said yes and got to work. Born for it.

The six confused them philosophically. A worm does not stop. A worm continues. Several continued straight off the stencil and had to be retrieved by hand, in the dark of night, which is a sentence we never expected to write in a confession letter to the Director of the FBI, but here we are, Kash, here we all are.

The four required some ninety-degree angles. Worms do not do angles. An Ugly Fuck Worm presented with a corner considers the corner, disagrees with the corner on a fundamental level, and goes around it in a small oval, and suddenly your four looks more like a nine and someone is on their knees on the National Mall whispering please at worms.

Please does not work. We know this now. Sebastian warned us. We thought he was being dramatic.

The seven was a full organizational emergency that we are still processing. A diagonal line reads to an Ugly Fuck Worm as an escape route. Every single worm assigned to the seven followed it off the stencil in a single focused column toward the Reflecting Pool with more coordination and apparent purpose than they had displayed at any other point in the entire operation. We caught most of them. It involved sustained low crouching, vocabulary we are not proud of, and one moment where a Park Police cruiser rolled slowly past us and everyone went completely still and tried to look like the ground.

The worms we didn’t catch are still in the Reflecting Pool. They have been in there for days now. We won't be surprised if the algae decides to kill itself at some point in the very near future.

We did it all in one night. With worms that have Stephen Miller’s face. Using the same life-draining force this administration has been applying to democracy, the rule of law, and the concept of a future since January 2025.

We have given you a confession, a methodology, a species identification, a biological mechanism, and a complete solution to an investigation that has consumed federal resources for several days and produced nothing except some very confused lab technicians and an interagency memo that we would genuinely pay to read.

We did your job for you, Kash. For free. You're welcome.

They were writing it to a king.

The message was simple: Go fuck yourself. We’re done.

They dressed it up in Latin-adjacent language and called it a Declaration, because even revolutionaries understood branding. But strip away the parchment and the powdered wigs and the mythology we’ve lacquered over it for 250 years and that’s what it was. A middle finger, notarized.

July 4th was the original No Kings Day. This is worth remembering.

Because in approximately three weeks, the fascists currently occupying the apparatus of American government are going to wrap themselves in flags and eat hot dogs and call it patriotism, and I need you to understand, in your bones, that they are doing it all wrong.

We are going to D.C. for Seven Days to do it right.

Because it's worth doing.

We are doing it because we care.

Every one of us who has been paying attention have felt discouraged at times. When millions of people in the streets across the country became a shrug. When court orders became suggestions the administration violated gleefully. When journalists started getting arrested at dawn at their homes in the suburbs for the crime of pointing a camera at a protest. When millions lost food assistance and the administration called it a win. When citizens of this country were murdered in the streets by masked men who still haven't been held accountable.

We have felt it. The momentum going out of the thing. The specific silence after.

We are still here anyway.

That matters more than it sounds. This system was engineered for our exhaustion. The cruelty is not incidental. It is load-bearing. They need us tired. They need us to look at what has happened to the courts, to the press, to the bodies of people we organized to protect, and conclude that showing up is theater. They need us to decide that the fight is finished, that it is useless to resist.

The fight is not finished.

But we need to be honest about where we are.

Small actions have carried us this far but they cannot carry us the rest of the way alone.

We know this. The marches, the vigils, the calls, the dispatches filed from detention center parking lots at 2 a.m., they mattered. They still matter. But the administration has done the math on our exhaustion and they like the numbers. They are counting on us to keep doing what we’ve been doing, because what we’ve been doing, as necessary as it has been, has not been enough to stop them.

Something has to change in scale.

In duration.

In the willingness to not just show up but to stay. To build something in public view that cannot be dispersed by a news cycle. That does not pack up and go home when the weekend ends. That plants itself in the capital of this country and says:

We are not leaving until this government answers for what it has done.

That is coming.

It has to come.

The logic of this moment demands it.

Let us be absolutely clear, because clarity is the only thing that earns trust right now: Seven Days in DC is not an encampment. It is not the occupation. It is not the moment we go to Washington and refuse to leave until the republic is restored. If you come to the Black Cat on June 28th expecting Resurrection City, you will be disappointed, and this movement cannot afford another disappointment weaponized into apathy.

What Seven Days in DC is is the room where we figure out what comes next.

The coalition-building that has to happen before a sustained action can hold.

The journalism, the organizers, the veteran voices, the conversations between people who have been fighting in their own corners and need to find each other before they can fight together.

The July 4th action on the National Mall. Not a finale. A beginning.

A demonstration that we can still put bodies in the symbolic heart of this country and make them impossible to ignore.

You cannot sustain a camp you haven’t built.

You cannot build it with people you haven’t met.

You cannot meet them if nobody shows up.

We are going to Washington.

For seven days.

June 28th through July 4th.

And, we want you there.

Not in a polite, “we’d love to have you” way.

In a we need bodies in the street and yours specifically way.

In a the-other-side-is-counting-on-your-exhaustion way.

Bring someone who has been thinking the same things you’ve been thinking.

Split a hotel room.

Sleep on a floor.

Bring your anger and your grief and your ideas about what it looks like when we finally stop going home.

History is not made by people who waited until it was convenient.

It is also not made by people who showed up alone.

We know some of you can’t.

The money isn’t there, or the body, or the safety, and that’s not weakness. That’s the specific cruelty of living inside a system that has been methodically making resistance harder for the people who have the most reason to resist.

We see you.

This moment sees you.

I’m coming back to Washington, D.C. for seven days. From June 28th through July 4th.

Not to see you. Not to meet with you. Not this time. You are, in fact, the one person in the entire city I have absolutely no interest in encountering, and I say that with the clarity of someone who has spent the last eighteen months watching you treat the executive branch like a storage unit for your personality disorders.

I’m coming because it’s America’s 250th birthday. And I’m inviting everyone I know.

Organizers. Veterans. Journalists. Artists. Voters who have never once held a sign. Musicians and comedians who have something to say and a stage to say it from. People who plan to drive all night from states you think you own. People who are going to walk into congressional offices and look your enablers in the eye and tell them exactly what their constituents actually want, out loud and on the record.

We are going to lobby Congress with the kind of relentless, coordinated, constituent-powered precision that does not show up on a donor list because it doesn’t need to.

We are going to run candidate forums where the people who want to replace your congressional allies will be asked the hard questions in public, where the answers cannot be walked back or deleted or buried in a DOJ filing.

We are going to train the next generation of organizers in the arts of showing up, pushing back, and refusing to leave — skills that will outlast this week, outlast this year, and outlast you.

And on the seventh day, July 4th, we are going to march.

Through the city. On the 250th anniversary of the country you have been running like a personal branding operation. Maybe we’ll visit the reflecting pool. Perhaps we will walk past the hole in the ground where the East Wing of the People’s House used to stand before you knocked it down to build yourself a ballroom.

To be crystal clear, we are not coming to D.C. for seven days because we hate this country. We are coming because we love it in the specific and inconvenient way that requires showing up for it.

The Prairie Correctional Facility has been sitting empty on the south edge of town since CoreCivic closed it in 2010, took the jobs, and left. For sixteen years they’ve kept what the company calls a “core staffing complement” on site, maintaining it, warming it, waiting for the moment the math worked again.

The math works again.

Here’s what nobody has put together yet, because it’s buried in SEC filings that require a specific kind of anger to read carefully:

CoreCivic’s Q1 2026 Form 10-Q, filed with federal regulators May 6th of this year, lists Prairie Correctional Facility as an “idle facility” being, and this is their exact language, “actively marketed” to potential government customers. The building’s book value increased nearly a million dollars in a single quarter. On an empty building. In a town of barely thirteen hundred people.

You don’t put money into something you’re planning to keep empty.

One month ago, Patrick Swindle told Wall Street analysts his company was anticipating “increased demand from federal partners in the second half of the year“ and was “well-positioned to meet that demand given our readily available capacity, in both existing and idle facilities.”

Second half of the year is July. July is three weeks away.

There is no public contract yet. No ribbon cutting. No cheerful little press release written in the dead-eyed language corporations use when they are about to monetize human captivity.

CoreCivic’s playbook is not a secret. They have been activating idle facilities all over the map: Dilley in Texas, West Tennessee, California City, Diamondback in Oklahoma, and the Midwest Regional Reception Center in Kansas. Idle facility appears in corporate filings as “actively marketed.” Government contract follows. Local objections get lawyered into paste. Hiring begins. Detainees arrive.

Minnesota has a law meant to keep private prison contracting out of the state’s correctional system. But immigration detention lives in the murkier federal swamp, where IGSAs, local agreements, and preemption arguments do the kind of work polite people pretend not to understand until the buses are already moving.

The lawyers have already billed the hours.

The only thing missing is the announcement.

The mayor of Appleton and other local officials have supported reopening the prison before. They are not wrong to want jobs. Twenty-eight percent poverty is a genuine emergency and CoreCivic is offering the only life raft in view.

But CoreCivic built the flood.

They left in 2010. They created the desperation they are now generously offering to temporarily relieve, for as long as the federal contract holds, at which point they can leave again and Appleton will still be there, smaller, older, poorer, waiting for the next company to show up with a deal.

That’s not economic development.

That’s a protection racket with a corporate wellness program.

DO SOMETHING

Call Appleton before the announcement drops. John Olinger, City Administrator: (320) 289-1363. County Commissioner Gary Hendrickx: (320) 289-2649. Ask them if they know the building’s book value went up nearly a million dollars last quarter. Ask them what “second half of the year” means. Ask them if they’ve heard from CoreCivic recently. Their answers, or their silence, are the story.

Make Patrick Swindle’s quote follow him everywhere. “We anticipate increased demand in the second half of the year and we are well-positioned with our idle facilities.” That quote, from a public earnings call, is the announcement before the announcement. Put it in front of every Minnesota legislator, Governor Walz’s office, every immigrant rights organization in the Upper Midwest. CoreCivic’s media line is (615) 263-3107. Call them. Ask about Appleton specifically. Make them say “no comment” on the record.

Get to Appleton before CoreCivic does. The window to stop this is before the IGSA is signed. Not after the press release. Not after the hiring fair. Not after the first bus of detainees rolls in from the Twin Cities.

Three hours from St. Paul.

The building is ready.

The company is ready.

The CEO has told his shareholders what kind of demand he expects.

Somebody in Minnesota needs to be ready to answer him.

The people imprisoned inside of Delaney Hall Concentration Camp are on a hunger and labor strike — innocent people kidnapped by ICE and kept in inhumane conditions all for the profit of private prison company GEO group and at the behest of the fascist Trump regime.

For days, ICE brutalized peaceful protesters, beating them, spraying them directly in the eyes with pepper spray, pushing them under the tires of oncoming semis. Detaining and severely injuring civilians who are exercising their first amendment rights.

The crimes of ICE recorded for everyone to see. Viral videos showcasing the absolute war-zone that a paramilitary with an unprecedented budget that has been allowed to murder civilians on the streets with impunity, create when they are criticized and condemned for the atrocity they are committing.

In a feeble attempt to mitigate the situation, NJ Gov Mikie Sherill made a deal with the Trump regime. In place of ICE, she sent the NJ State Police to “protect protesters.”

What did the police do?

The same thing that ICE did.

Escalate with violence and brutalize peaceful protesters.

They didn’t come to protect the protesters or the first amendment.

The police came to protect ICE and their operations. To maintain keeping innocent people in an inhumane concentration camp operating for profit.

Gov. Sherill’s response? She lied. Saying the police didn’t act the same way ICE did. That they didn’t beat people with batons, or pepper spray them, or shoot projectiles at them.

The police did all of those things. All while ICE stood on the roof and behind the gates to shoot pepper balls into the crowd like some sort of sick game.

Ian Austin, military veteran and activist who has maintained a consistent presence on the ground was shot six times on the night of May 30th with pepper balls and rubber bullets. All because he used nothing but his voice, and they didn’t like what he had to say. He wasn’t shot by ICE. He was shot by the police that were called in by the Governor.

Because the police aren’t there to protect the people. They are there to protect what they’ve always protected - property, profit and power. They move the crowd to let ICE vehicles by to continue their kidnapping efforts.

It was peaceful before the night’s escalations. Songs were being sung. Interviews were being conducted by journalists.

My friend Jessica Kelly used her megaphone to speak to those trapped inside and instill hope, letting them know that the people were still fighting for them outside while they continued to fight inside.

The peace would not last long.

Everything was quiet as the sun set. But when night came, the police lined up in their riot gear in preparation for their escalation.

Earlier that day we had seen them staging miles down the road. Twenty police cars/ unmarked vehicles where police began to gear up. Horse trailers were in tow.

Narratives spun afterwards condemned the protesters, saying they were paid. Propaganda called them terrorists.

The protesters came with their cameras, goggles, signs, and their voices.

The police with their seemingly unlimited resources, funded by the state, came with batons, riot shields, tear gas, pepper balls, rubber bullets, flash bangs, horses and drones that flew overhead.

The police escalated with violence, not the protesters. And they gassed and beat protesters back for over a mile.

Sparks flew as they launched projectiles into the crowd. Long trail lines of gas arched overhead as far as the eye could see. The full moon peaked through the smoke.

Gov. Sherill sent the police out there to continue violating the first amendment rights of the people. All the while a concentration camp still stands.

The next night there was a curfew issued at 9pm. They shut the road down a mile from where Delaney Hall sits. Protesters and press remained at the intersection to continue exercising their first amendment rights in the face of such inhumanity.

What did the police do this time?

They came with even more resources. They formed a wall around a much thinner group of protesters than the night before, completely trapping them in a circle.

One by one they removed credential press from the crowd and pushed them back down the street. As they beat and arrested the remaining protesters in the circle, they continued to try and push press back to keep them from filming what was occurring.

The credentialed press, usually not vocalizing their own protest and remaining observant, stood their ground. They refused to move and they even vocalized their anger at the police.

Because they knew what was happening wasn’t right.

What was happening was just another step into authoritarianism.

The police, in collaboration with ICE, care nothing about the first amendment. They don’t care about the rights of the people. They are protecting these concentration camps.

And if this is what they do to protesters while a hundred cameras record them, imagine what they do behind closed doors to the innocent people they have inside.

I grew up hearing José Martí’s words.

Like many Cuban Americans, I was taught to admire his courage, his patriotism, and his belief in human dignity. We quoted him when speaking about freedom. We invoked him when discussing exile. We celebrated him as part of our identity.

But it wasn’t until my father was detained that I truly understood what Martí was asking of us.

He was asking us to choose.

Not between political parties.

Not between Cuba and the United States.

Not between left and right.

But between power and people.

I chose people.

I never planned to become an activist.

I was a tour guide in Miami. I spent my days sharing stories about a city built by immigrants, exiles, dreamers, and survivors. I was building businesses. Creating experiences. Growing something that was entirely my own.

I loved that life.

I worked hard for it.

I believed my future would be measured by the tours I built, the businesses I expanded, and the community I served.

Then my father was detained.

And suddenly none of that mattered.

The business I had built stopped being my focus.

My plans disappeared.

My future was put on hold.

The only thing that mattered was bringing my father home alive.

My father was not a political talking point.

He was not a statistic.

He was not a case number.

He was my father.

A man living with diabetes, schizophrenia, neuropathy, heart disease, and high blood pressure.

A man whose health was already fragile before detention.

For more than six months, I lived with fear.

The kind of fear that follows you everywhere.

The kind that wakes you up in the middle of the night.

The kind that settles into your chest and never fully leaves.

Every phone call carried uncertainty.

Every day brought new anxiety.

Every night ended with unanswered questions.

Was he getting proper medical care?

Was he receiving his medication?

Would I see him again?

I learned that detention does not only imprison the people inside.

It imprisons entire families.

It consumes your peace.

Your finances.

Your relationships.

Your ability to imagine a future beyond survival.

While politicians debated immigration, my family was living its consequences.

This was not politics to us.

It was our life.

And then, after more than six months, my father was finally released.

We thought the nightmare was over.

We thought freedom would bring relief.

Instead, we found ourselves facing a new crisis.

Just days after coming home, my father was hospitalized with dangerously elevated blood sugar levels and symptoms that raised concerns about a possible stroke.

The freedom we had prayed for arrived alongside another fight.

After spending months trying to bring him home, we suddenly found ourselves fighting to help him recover.

We got him back.

But we did not get him back unchanged.

That realization broke my heart.

Because detention does not end when someone walks out the door.

The trauma follows the family home.

The medical consequences follow families home.

The fear follows the family home.

The financial burdens follow families home.

And recovery becomes its own battle.

For a long time I was angry.

Angry at what had happened to my father.

Angry at how powerless I felt.

Angry that so many other families were carrying the same pain.

But eventually that anger became something else.

Purpose.

At first, I was simply fighting for my father.

Then I began meeting other families.

Families terrified for loved ones inside detention.

Families desperately searching for answers.

Families carrying the same fear that had consumed my life.

I realized that if I felt alone, thousands of others did too.

So I began speaking out.

I shared my father’s story publicly.

I worked with families navigating detention.

I spoke with journalists.

I attended and organized vigils.

I stood alongside faith leaders, labor organizers, immigrant advocates, and community members demanding accountability and dignity.

I helped create spaces where families could gather, grieve, organize, and fight together.

What started as a daughter’s fight became something larger than myself.

One of the most defining moments came when I attended the hearing involving Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

I was not there as a politician.

I was not there as a policy expert.

I was there as a daughter.

A daughter carrying the story of a father who had suffered.

A daughter representing families who too often feel invisible.

A daughter refusing to allow people in power to discuss immigration without confronting its human consequences.

I never imagined standing in front of cameras.

Giving interviews.

Speaking at rallies.

Helping organize demonstrations.

Becoming one of the public faces of the fight for immigrant rights.

But when someone you love is suffering, silence stops being an option.

As a Cuban American, this experience also forced me to confront difficult questions.

I grew up hearing stories about exile, separation, sacrifice, political persecution, and survival.

Those stories shaped my understanding of freedom and justice.

Which is why one of the most painful parts of this journey has been watching so many within my own community support policies that inflict those same wounds on other families.

That truth is difficult for me to say.

It is even more difficult to live.

I feel profound disappointment when I see fellow Cuban Americans celebrate detention policies that separate families or dismiss the suffering of immigrants as the price of security.

I understand the trauma that shaped our community.

I understand the history.

But I struggle to understand how a community whose identity is rooted in exile can become indifferent to the suffering of people seeking the same chance at dignity that our own families once sought.

The lesson I inherited from my community was not that some immigrants deserve compassion and others do not.

The lesson I inherited was that human dignity is universal.

Perhaps the moment that crystallized this for me came when I watched political leaders and public figures turn immigration into a headline, a campaign message, or a social media post while families like mine were living through a crisis.

I remember reading statements and posts about immigration and feeling something unexpected.

Not outrage.

Indifference.

Because while politicians were crafting messages, I was sitting beside hospital beds.

While commentators debated strategy, I was wondering whether my father would recover.

While others treated immigration as politics, my family was living its consequences.

At some point the tweets stopped mattering.

The headlines stopped mattering.

The political theater stopped mattering.

What mattered was a father trying to heal.

What mattered was a daughter trying to help him recover.

What mattered were the countless families experiencing similar pain far away from cameras and microphones.

That experience changed me.

It taught me that real life happens far from social media.

Far from campaign slogans.

Far from the people who profit politically from division.

It taught me that humanity must come before ideology.

I believe families belong together.

I believe people deserve medical care regardless of immigration status.

I believe compassion is not weakness.

And I believe war, whether military, economic, or political, is not a path to peace.

José Martí also wrote:

“La mejor manera de decir es hacer.”

“The best way to say is to do.”

Those words became my compass.

Because there came a point when speaking was no longer enough.

Watching was no longer enough.

Hoping was no longer enough.

Action became necessary.

People often ask how I became an activist.

The truth is simple.

I became an activist because I am a daughter.

A daughter who loved her father enough to risk everything she had built.

A daughter who discovered that grief can become purpose.

A daughter who learned that ordinary people can challenge powerful systems when they stand together.

I did not choose this fight.

This fight chose me.

And while it cost me the life I once imagined for myself, it gave me something I never expected:

A voice.

A community.

A mission.

I used to spend my days telling stories about Miami’s history.

Now I am helping write a new chapter in it.

One where immigrant families refuse to remain invisible.

One where daughters refuse to remain silent.

One where dignity matters more than politics.

And one where, as Martí urged us more than a century ago, we choose to cast our lot with the people of the earth, not the powerful who seek to divide them.

My name is Rook T. Winchester. I am the founder, editor-in-chief, and primary writer of Closer to the Edge, a reader-powered independent journalism publication currently reaching readers in all 50 states. I am writing to request a formal pre-activity advisory opinion regarding a proposed expressive activity at the Reflecting Pool on or around July 4, 2026, which I believe does not require a permit under applicable NPS regulations, but about which I have developed a number of questions I have been unable, despite considerable effort, to satisfactorily resolve on my own.

I want to be transparent with you. This letter is uncomfortable to write. I suspect it may be uncomfortable to read. I apologize in advance — though not very much, because the discomfort is, in a manner of speaking, the point. I ask only that you remain with me to the end. I promise it gets harder before it gets easier.

I. Description of Proposed Activity

On or around July 4, 2026, a group of fewer than 25 individuals — organized under the banner of the Dildo Distribution Delegation, a protest collective committed to the philosophy of tactical frivolity — intends to briefly introduce a collection of rubber phalluses into the Reflecting Pool on the National Mall.

I recognize that sentence exists now and cannot be taken back. I stand by it.

Each object will bear a written message of political or constitutional significance — including but not limited to phrases such as “FIGHT FASCISM,” “WE THE PEOPLE,” “FIRST AMENDMENT,” and potentially the names of specific constitutional provisions currently under assault by the executive branch of the United States government. The messages will be legible. We have given considerable thought to shaft length as it relates to character count.

All objects will be retrieved from the water upon conclusion of the activity, which isn’t expected to last very long. Nothing will be left standing. No structures will be erected — a term we will return to in Section III, as it raises more questions than one might expect.

The objects in question are legal consumer products, commercially available at retailers across the United States, including several national chains. They are made of non-toxic, water-safe materials. They will not damage, stain, or chemically alter the water or pool infrastructure. We have done the research.

The intended message of this action is as follows: America is being asked to look away from what is happening to its democracy. We intend to give it something impossible to look away from. The Reflecting Pool has, since this nation’s founding, served as a mirror. On July 4, 2026, we intend to hold that mirror up and ask the nation what it sees. We understand that what it sees may shock it. We consider that the desired outcome.

We are fighting fascism with phalluses. We recognize you may have some questions. We are prepared to provide you with answers at whatever length the agency deems necessary.

II. Legal Basis for Belief That No Permit Is Required

Under 36 CFR 7.96(g)(h), demonstrations involving 25 or fewer persons may be held without a permit, provided the group does not erect temporary structures beyond small lecterns or speakers’ platforms, and the group is not merely an extension of a larger permitted demonstration. We meet both criteria, pending your answer to our question regarding what, precisely, constitutes an erection under federal park regulations.

We further contend that the deployment of message-bearing floating objects in a public water feature, with plans for retrieval and no lasting impact on park resources, constitutes expressive conduct protected under the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. The Supreme Court has consistently held that symbolic speech — particularly political symbolic speech — occupies the highest tier of First Amendment protection. We are aware this may be the first time that principle has been applied to buoyant adult novelty items. We consider that distinction an opportunity, not a liability.

We acknowledge this is a novel legal question. We are requesting this advisory opinion precisely because we wish to act in good faith. We are not trying to be difficult. We are trying to be impossible to ignore, which is a different thing entirely.

III. Formal Questions for Advisory Opinion

We respectfully request written answers to the following questions. We have attempted to order them from least to most awkward, and largely failed.

1. What constitutes an “erection” under 36 CFR 7.96, and is that definition applied uniformly regardless of the object’s material composition, orientation, or buoyancy?

2. Does size matter? Specifically: is there a minimum or maximum dimension for objects introduced temporarily into the Reflecting Pool, and does the agency’s answer change based on whether the objects are floating vertically or horizontally?

3. Is there a regulatory maximum number of floating objects permitted in the Reflecting Pool simultaneously, and does the answer change if the objects are deployed in formation?

4. At what point does a collection of floating objects achieve sufficient mass or visual impact to constitute a “demonstration” for permit purposes — and is that threshold measured by number, surface area, or the subjective reaction of onlookers?

5. If 1,776 objects are deployed in honor of the nation’s founding year, does the patriotic significance of the number constitute a legally relevant mitigating factor in any enforcement action, or does the agency take the position that the founders would have wanted fewer?

6. Is there a specific regulation prohibiting objects shaped like human genitalia on NPS land, or must such a prohibition name the shape explicitly to be enforceable? We ask because vagueness doctrine cuts both ways.

7. The objects will bear written political messages. At what point does a message-bearing phallus become protected political speech, and does the medium affect the constitutional analysis, or merely the comfort level of those conducting it?

8. We plan to retrieve all objects upon completion. Does the thoroughness of our extraction procedure have any bearing on the agency’s enforcement posture? We intend to be very thorough.

9. If a permitted demonstration is occurring simultaneously elsewhere on the Mall and a member of that demonstration walks over and observes ours, have the two demonstrations merged? And if so, who is responsible for the resulting entity?

10. If the activity draws a crowd of onlookers who are not participants, does their presence count toward the 25-person threshold — and if an onlooker begins laughing, have they joined the demonstration?

11. If objects bearing the text of the First Amendment float within sight of the Lincoln Memorial, does the Memorial’s historical significance as a site of protest affect the constitutional weight of the activity? We ask in the spirit of thematic coherence.

12. If one of our objects is confiscated as evidence, are there chain-of-custody requirements that govern how it must be handled, stored, and ultimately disposed of?

13. If a participant is also a credentialed member of the press documenting the activity for publication, do their press rights provide additional protection — or does the First Amendment simply apply twice in that instance?

14. Is the NPS prepared to provide a written advisory opinion on this proposed activity prior to July 4, 2026? If not, will the agency provide its declination in writing, and does a failure to respond constitute implicit acknowledgment that no applicable prohibition exists?

15. Does the NPS wish to be credited by name in the resulting coverage, or would the agency prefer attribution to “a federal permits specialist who read the whole thing twice and still wasn’t sure what to do”?

IV. Closing Statement

I want to be clear: we are not trying to make your job difficult. We are trying to make America look at itself. The Reflecting Pool has always been a place of reflection — of grief, of protest, of national reckoning. On July 4, 1776, a group of men signed a document asserting that certain truths were self-evident. On July 4, 2026, a group of fewer than 25 people intend to float some very well-labeled rubber phalluses in a federally managed body of water and ask whether those truths still hold.

There is a disease spreading through activist spaces right now and it looks like wisdom from a distance.

Up close it smells like a corpse.

The disease is equivalence. The symptoms are familiar. Republicans build Concentration Camps. Democrats fail to close them. Conclusion: same thing. Republicans authorize the raids. Democrats issue statements so toothless they couldn’t bite through wet bread. Conclusion: same thing. Republicans send ICE into neighborhoods at 4 a.m. Democratic governors deploy police to gas protesters who showed up to say something about it. Conclusion: same thing.

At some point “both sides” stops being an argument.

It becomes a casket.

And the person making it climbs inside voluntarily and pulls the lid shut and calls it enlightenment.

I understand the seduction. God help me, I do. Because social media has built an entire political genre around one emotional payoff: the reveal. The moment when you finally see through the illusion. Not Republicans. Not Democrats. Everyone. Every politician is corrupt. Every institution is rotten. Every movement is a grift. Every leader is compromised. You get to stand above the burning battlefield, hands clean, and announce to your followers that everyone below you is equally covered in ash.

It feels profound.

It feels cynical in the cool way, the way that means you’re smarter than the people still fighting.

It is almost never either of those things.

It is exhaustion. Wearing a disguise. Holding a megaphone.

Here is a thing that should not require a lengthy essay in the year of our Lord 2026 but apparently does:

Different things are different.

A Democratic governor ordering police to clear a protest deserves criticism. A Democratic mayor authorizing pepper spray on a crowd of grandmothers deserves criticism. A wealthy Democrat protecting their portfolio while people are dying in detention deserves criticism so sustained and so vicious it follows them to every fundraiser they ever attend for the rest of their natural lives.

Nobody serious disputes this.

But criticism is not equivalence.

The person who starts a fire and the person who fails to extinguish it deserve different judgments. They are not occupying the same moral position. They are not the same category of human failure. The distinction is not subtle.

Erase that distinction and accountability becomes impossible.

Erase it and you have built a philosophy that is, functionally, indistinguishable from surrender.

Let me tell you about some people everyone seems to have forgotten.

Andy Kim visited Delaney Hall, saw conditions inside, then got pepper-sprayed outside while trying to de-escalate the standoff.

Emily Randall made seven oversight visits to the Tacoma detention center. Before a vigil outside the facility, she attempted another oversight visit and was denied entry.

Yassamin Ansari visited the Eloy Detention Center and met Arbella “Yari” Rodríguez Márquez, a leukemia patient who, according to Ansari’s office, was coughing up blood, too weak to stand, and had lost 55 pounds. Ansari went back to Washington and demanded urgent medical care.

Dan Goldman has made weekly oversight visits to 26 Federal Plaza and turned his Manhattan office into a triage center for families caught in the ICE dragnet. His office has helped facilitate the release of more than 30 migrants.

Jason Crow has repeatedly conducted and led oversight visits at the Aurora ICE facility, demanded answers from the Trump administration, and joined litigation to protect congressional access.

LaMonica McIver went to Delaney Hall for a congressional oversight visit. After federal officers arrested Newark Mayor Ras Baraka outside the facility, McIver was later charged and indicted over the confrontation.

A dozen Democratic members of Congress sued the Trump administration in federal court for illegally blocking their oversight visits. They won. ICE ignored the ruling and invented new restrictions, but they kept showing up.

These are not people running the operation. These are people trying to stop it with the limited, imperfect, maddeningly insufficient tools available to them in the middle of a constitutional crisis inside a system designed to make accountability nearly impossible.

And there are voices, loud voices, influential voices, voices with platforms and communities built on this movement, insisting these people are no different than the ones running the camps.

That is not analysis.

That is what happens when a brain has been online too long and starts confusing the feeling of clarity with actual clarity.

Political exhaustion does something dangerous to the human brain.

It compresses everything.

Nuance becomes intolerable. Every story becomes the same story. Every institution becomes the same institution. Every failure becomes evidence of the same grand unified conspiracy of mediocrity. Everybody is guilty. Everything is rotten. Nothing matters and nobody is trying and the whole thing is a joke.

The people who benefit most from that type of thinking are the people causing the greatest harm.

Because once distinctions disappear, accountability disappears with them.

If everyone is corrupt, why investigate corruption? If everyone is responsible, why identify specific responsibility? If every politician is identical, why organize against any particular politician? If the whole thing is a joke, why show up?

The answer becomes that you don’t.

You scroll. You complain. You disengage. You congratulate yourself for seeing through the system while the system continues to operate exactly as designed, exactly as intended, with exactly the outcomes the people running it wanted: fewer protesters at the gate, fewer cameras in the facility, fewer bodies making the machine uncomfortable.

The powerful have always loved cynicism.

Cynicism is the one political philosophy that has never once threatened them.

Outrage builds movements.

Hopelessness builds audiences.

And there is a meaningful difference between those two things that I am not willing to pretend doesn’t exist.

Criticize Democrats when they fail. Do it loudly. Do it specifically. Do it with names and dates and the receipts. Hold them to the standard the moment demands and do not let them off the hook because the alternative is worse.

But stop confusing disappointment with equivalence.

Stop mistaking the feeling of being done with the act of being right.

Stop announcing your exhaustion to communities full of people who showed up to a protest for the first time last month and are watching you, right now, to see whether this is worth continuing.

Because here is what I know about those people. They are scared. They are new. They do not know the difference between the party and the movement. They found a door and they walked through it and they are standing on the other side looking for someone to tell them whether to keep going.

And the most dangerous thing, the thing that helps the people running these concentration camps more than almost anything else, is a prominent voice in that space picking up a megaphone and announcing to everyone within earshot that the whole thing is a fucking joke.

Demoralization is a strategy.

It has always been a strategy.

And it works whether it comes from the right or from the left or from someone standing in a parking lot in Newark who is frustrated and exhausted and understandably furious and has temporarily confused surrender with insight.

One party has members getting pepper-sprayed, denied entry, indicted, and dragged into court fights while trying to inspect these facilities.

The other party is mostly doing photo ops, press hits, and applause for the machine.

These are not the same thing.

They will never be the same thing.

This is not that version.

The most important political victory of the last decade wasn’t won at the ballot box. It wasn’t won in a courtroom or a legislature or even a war room. It was won in kitchens at midnight, in the gap between the third and fourth scroll, in the precise moment when a person looked at the news and felt nothing.

Not anger. Not fear.

Just the low, gray hum of someone who has already decided, without quite deciding, that none of this is going to be okay and there’s nothing to be done about it.

That moment is the ballgame.

Fascism doesn’t need your support. It doesn’t need your enthusiasm or your salute or your sincere belief in the project. It needs, at minimum, your exhaustion. Your willingness to look away. Your quiet, half-conscious conclusion that the machinery is too big and too broken and too captured to be worth fighting.

It will take your despair as a yes.

THE ARCHITECTS OF THIS UNDERSTOOD IT PERFECTLY

You don’t have to attribute malice to recognize strategy.

Flood the information space until people can’t locate true north. Manufacture scandal at a pace that outstrips the capacity to respond. Make the news feel like weather, something that happens to you, not something you have any relationship with. Normalize each new outrage just enough so that the next one requires a larger shock to register.

The technical term for this is firehose of falsehood.

The practical effect is something older and simpler: people get tired.

And tired people go home.

Hannah Arendt, writing in the ruins of mid-century Europe, identified the precondition for totalitarianism not as a population of true believers but as a population of the atomized; individuals stripped of community, of collective identity, of any sense that their participation in the world was connected to outcomes in the world.

You don’t need to convert people to fascism.

You need to sever them from each other.

The ideology fills the vacuum.

HERE IS THE THING ABOUT DESPAIR THAT DOESN’T GET SAID ENOUGH

It isn’t passive.

It’s generative.

Apathy empties the field.

Despair populates it, just with different people than you’d want.

Because fascism has always understood that humans in genuine pain, humans who have lost something real, economic security, cultural footing, a coherent story about who they are and where they’re going, are not looking for a policy platform.

They’re looking for a narrative.

A villain.

A restoration myth.

Someone to tell them that their suffering was caused by something nameable, and that nameable thing can be punished.

The genius of the authoritarian pitch is that it meets people in their actual grief and offers them something real: belonging, purpose, the catharsis of directed rage.

It is wrong about the source of the suffering.

It is telling about the suffering itself.

Despair without direction is just pain.

The question, the only question that matters, is who shows up to give it direction.

SO WHAT’S THE ANTIDOTE?

Not optimism.

Optimism is a feeling, and feelings aren’t infrastructure.

The antidote is agency.

The demonstrated, embodied, repeated experience of collective action producing real outcomes.

Not the promise that things will work out.

The memory, built in the body, not just the mind, that when people move together, things move.

This is why visibility matters beyond symbolism.

Why absurdity matters beyond comedy.

Why showing up matters even when, especially when, the showing up feels insufficient.

Because the story fascism needs you to believe, more than any other, is that the showing up doesn’t matter.

That the machinery has already won.

That you are alone in a crowd of the equally alone.

Every time that story gets interrupted, the architecture shakes a little.

THE CONSENT OF THE GOVERNED IS A PHRASE WE LEARN IN CIVICS CLASS AND MOSTLY FORGET

But fascism runs on a different kind of consent.

The passive, unspoken, exhausted consent of people who stopped believing their refusal was possible.

Who signed nothing and surrendered everything in the space between one news cycle and the next.

The resistance to that is not a single dramatic act.

It is the accumulation of small, deliberate choices to remain present.

To stay angry without being consumed.

To build something with someone else.

To refuse the isolation that makes the whole project work.

History does not remember the people who were too tired to participate.

It is being written right now, in rooms full of people who aren’t.

Participants in the strike are calling for:

1. An immediate in-person meeting with Governor Mikie Sherrill at Delaney Hall to directly observe conditions and hear testimony from detained individuals

2. The immediate release of vulnerable detainees, including elderly individuals, pregnant women, young people, pregnant women and those with serious medical conditions.

3. Meaningful review of immigration cases and habeas filings

4. An end to what they describe as coercive pressure to sign deportation or voluntary departure documents.

Since the start of the strike on Friday, May 22, participants and advocates report a pattern of escalating enforcement actions against those who have refused to eat or participate in GEO Group’s exploitative work program including threats of transfers against individuals who have communicated with outside advocates or elected officials.

ICE and GEO Group personnel have used intimidation tactics and have attempted to discourage participation in the strike, including through unit-level interventions and threats of disciplinary consequences.

Despite efforts by activists and legislators to work with facility administrators, the GEO Group and ICE are poised to cancel the 3rd visitation day in a row adding group punishment to the list of abuses they are inflicting on the people in detention and their families

Participants in the strike confirm that they have communicated that DHS has brought several different units down for meals simultaneously to create the illusion that no hunger strike is occurring.

Outside the facility, confrontations with Department of Homeland Security personnel during demonstrations, including the use of pepper spray against protesters.

A participant of the labor and hunger strike stated:

“We are uplifting our voices, across all the detention centers, of the injustice we are suffering from being detained in these detention centers.

When we came into this country, we were allowed parole and a work permit to be legal in this country. We have people who are married, who have their marriage petitions approved, and are awaiting their residence card, yet are still detained and their cases are yet to be resolved - this is neglicency. They are being told that in order to adjust their status they need to go back to their home country to continue their status of adjustment case.

Who will then take care of their family and kids? Who will take them to school? Who will pay their rent and feed them? Kids will be left alone, without support and love from their parents. Kids will suffer psychologically and physically if their parents get deported….they force people who don’t know how to read to sign their own voluntary departure, for others they lie and offer money to sign documents, but don’t end up giving them any nor disclose its voluntary departure.

They make you believe you only have two options, deportation or voluntary departure. We demand the judges are non basis and fair to every individual case. In the detention centers in Minneapolis, Chicago, and Boston they were able to fight to have 300 people released due to the protests outside and having their voices and demands uplifted.

We have people sleeping on the floor for not being processed quick enough. They neglect medications for people who are in dire need of it. All of our bonds are denied and they are telling us to file habeas corpus for everyone that is in here, they constantly tell us we are a danger to society. The same judge that denies your bond is the same judge that reviews our immigration court cases and that is not fair.

It’s not fair to take money away from all the families in this detention center. We want to be free. Majority of us were arrested during our check in appointments with immigration, so now even if we abide the law, pay taxes and do our due diligence, we are still detained for going to immigration appointments voluntarily.

We were arrested due to the change in government, a political prosecution. They are people scared to go back to their home country due to prosecution but this country now is doing the same, with their racist political prosecution. We are political prisoners. It is not fair that good and humble people, that are law abiding, are detained against their will for doing everything they were told to do.

We plead that everyone hears our voices and our demands. We need someone, with authority, to come visit us and make a change for our livelihood. The immigrant officials would only talk to people in regards to voluntary departure or deportation, but now they’re going unit by unit asking our dislikes of the food and living conditions.

While those things are important, we demand all our immigration cases be reviewed and processed fairly. This is why we are on the hunger and labor strike. Our labor isn’t valued. We don’t get a letter of recommendation for being a good worker, for the hard labor we provide here to better our living conditions. We were the ones who shoveled the snow during the winter, we are the ones serving the food, we are the ones who clean the units, we are the ones who clean the bathrooms. We are not recognized or valued for our labor.

People who are out on bond are threatened to not speak to the media or press or else they will be arrested by ICE again. That’s why we are speaking, from the heart of the detention center, our pleads and demands. We need a congress person, or any higher official, to help liberate us. We are not criminals. We are fathers who don’t want to be separated from our families. We will hold our hunger strike until our voices are heard. We admire and appreciate all the protesters outside and may God bless everyone.”

Several participants added that detained workers are responsible for facility maintenance, food service, and sanitation tasks, for $1-$2 per day and say their labor is not often compensated, sometimes for days, weeks or months.

Participants will continue the hunger and labor strike until their demands are addressed and outside oversight is granted.

Eyes on ICE New Jersey (EOINJ) stands in unwavering solidarity with those detained inside Delaney Hall and will remain present throughout this struggle-continuing to document conditions, support impacted families, and bear witness to the treatment of those inside.

I’m writing because June 14th is coming up and I’m turning 80, which is a very big number but honestly I look 60, everyone says it, even people who don’t have to say it. Doctors. Strangers. Very beautiful women. The point is I’m having a party and it’s going to be the greatest party in the history of parties, possibly in the history of civilization, and I need you to be there.

I have UFC fighters. The best ones. Real warriors, tremendous people, but Kim — between you and me — they’re not you. Nobody hits like you hit. Nobody. And I mean that in the emotional sense.

Do you remember Singapore? I think about Singapore. I’m not supposed to say that but it’s true. We had something, you and I. Two strong men who started out calling each other names — which honestly was also fun, I’m not going to lie — and then we figured it out. We figured each other out. You wrote me those letters and I kept them, Kim. I kept ALL of them. They found some at Mar-a-Lago and made a whole thing about it but that’s not the point, the point is I kept them because they meant something to me. They meant a lot to me.

You didn’t answer my last letter. That’s okay. I understand you’re busy. You have a country to run, you have parades, you have that daughter of yours who’s very impressive by the way, very strong genes, takes after her father clearly. I’m not mad about the letter. I’m not even a little mad. I just want you to know that I’m not mad.

The party is on the White House lawn. South Lawn. The good lawn. We’re putting the Octagon right there and the whole country is coming and there will be fireworks and I already told everybody it’s going to be the greatest show on earth, which means you have to come because otherwise it’s not actually the greatest show on earth. You see the position this puts me in.

I was going to have Rocket Man play but Elton said no. Different story.

Kim, look. I’m going to be honest with you in a way that I’m not always honest with people, which is that this second term is very busy and very winning but sometimes I’m in the residence and I’m reading briefings about the South China Sea or whatever and I think — I wish Kim and I could just talk. Like we used to. Remember Hanoi? I know Hanoi didn’t go perfectly but I think about the energy of it. The tension. Two guys who could destroy the world sitting across a table eating terrible food. There was something there.

You can bring whoever you want. Bring the translator. Bring the daughter. We’ll get them good seats, right by the Octagon, full security, I’ll tell the Secret Service you’re Very Important, which you are, obviously, you run a whole country, nuclear weapons, the whole thing, very impressive. We can get you whatever food you want. Whatever. Name it.

I’m also enclosing, again, the letter from before that you didn’t accept. I know your guys at the UN said they didn’t want it but I think maybe there was a miscommunication because I can’t imagine you told them to actually say no. That doesn’t sound like you. You’re better than that. We’re both better than that.

Just think about it. June 14th. White House. Come watch some guys punch each other. Bring a jacket, evenings can be cool. And maybe after, we find a quiet room somewhere, no translators if you want, no cameras, just two world leaders who used to be close and maybe could be again.

Dear Mr. Katyal,

I saw you recently on The Last Word with Lawrence O’Donnell, and I am writing because I cannot shake the feeling that this country has engineered a deliberate crisis of reading comprehension.

I taught English for thirty-eight years.

My entire career revolved around teaching children that words matter, sequence matters, and sentences do not stop meaning what they mean simply because the implications become uncomfortable.

Which brings me to Section 3 of the 14th Amendment.

A president summoned supporters to Washington, urged them to fight, watched for hours while the Capitol was attacked, publicly targeted his own vice president during the assault, praised the attackers afterward, reframed them as victims and hostages, pardoned them, and has now engineered a $1.8 billion taxpayer-funded compensation scheme for the very people he sent.

I do not understand how an English teacher is expected to read that sequence and not arrive at the phrase “aid or comfort.”

And I especially do not understand why so many intelligent people speak as though impeachment is the only constitutional mechanism available when Section 3 already describes a disability and explicitly explains how Congress may remove it by a two-thirds vote.

Remove it.

That is the word the amendment uses.

Not create.

Not impose.

Remove.

As a teacher, I spent decades warning students to pay attention to verbs because verbs tell you what a sentence is actually doing.

This verb appears to matter enormously.

Because if the Constitution provides a mechanism for removing a disability, then the plain reading suggests the disability already exists absent congressional action.

Otherwise the amendment becomes grammatically absurd. A fire extinguisher with instructions for extinguishing fires no one is ever permitted to acknowledge.

Mr. Katyal, constitutional litigation is more difficult than diagramming sentences. I understand that. But there comes a point where legal caution stops being prudence and starts being participation in the evasion.

I am not asking you to file a brief tomorrow.

I am asking you something simpler:

Would you feel comfortable standing before the Supreme Court and arguing the plain meaning of these words exactly as written?

Because I suspect millions of Americans would finally feel less insane hearing someone say aloud what they can already read for themselves.

And I suspect you already know what that argument is.

Let’s start with the face. Your face.

Because before we get to the $1.8 billion slush fund, before we get to Ghislaine Maxwell’s cushy accommodations, before we get to the part where you stood at a Senate hearing yesterday and essentially argued that men who beat police officers with flagpoles deserve taxpayer compensation — we need to talk about what is happening with your face.

You look like a man who has not produced a successful bowel movement since the Obama administration. You look like someone who ate a concrete sandwich in 2014 and has been quietly waiting for resolution ever since. Every single time a camera finds you — at a podium, at a hearing, lurking slightly behind Kash Patel like a man who needs a wall to lean on — you have the face of a person who has been informed that the nearest restroom is in another zip code. That is not gravitas, Todd. That is suffering. That is a man sealed shut by the sheer compacted weight of his own moral compromise, every bad decision calcified into a single immovable mass that your body has simply decided to build a life around rather than deal with.

You are the human equivalent of a rest stop toilet that’s been out of order for months. There’s a handwritten sign on you. Nobody’s happy about it.

You were once an actual prosecutor, Todd. A federal one. You went home at night and presumably looked at yourself in the mirror and felt something recognizable as self-respect. You worked nights as a paralegal because you wanted this — the weight of it, the meaning of it, the idea that the law was a thing worth protecting.

And then Donald Trump called.

And something in you — some last clenched, stubborn, straining remnant of the person you used to be — gave up. Just let go. And what followed was the longest, slowest, most public moral evacuation in the history of the American legal profession, except nothing actually came out, because that’s the whole problem, Todd, that’s the through line of this entire catastrophe: you are a man constitutionally, professionally, and apparently gastrointestinally incapable of release.

You tried to help him walk on the hush money. He was convicted on 34 felony counts. You ran out the clock on January 6th until Trump won and Jack Smith had to pack his desk. You became the legal mechanism by which a man who tried to end American democracy escaped accountability. You were the cork. You were the plug. You were the reason nothing went anywhere.

And your reward? Acting.

Not Attorney General. Acting Attorney General. A title so provisional it has a disclaimer built into it. A title that means: we’re using you right now and we’ll let you know. You burned your bar standing, your reputation, your soul, the last functioning part of your conscience, and the man you did it all for is out there right now deciding if maybe the EPA guy wants your job.

Let’s talk about the $1.776 billion Anti-Weaponization Fund. Created without congressional approval. Funded by taxpayers. Potentially — and you refused under oath to rule this out, sitting there in that hearing room yesterday with that face, that face, looking like a man trying to remember if he took his medication or just thought about taking it — potentially available to January 6th rioters who assaulted, bloodied, and hospitalized Capitol Police officers.

You sat in front of United States Senators and you said anyone who believes they were a victim of weaponization can apply.

Anyone.

No floor. No ceiling. No guardrails. Just a wide open fund and a commission whose members you appoint and an answer so slippery it practically slid off the table and pooled on the floor of the hearing room. And you delivered it with the serene, thousand-yard stare of a man who has made peace with the fact that nothing is ever coming out and that is simply who he is now.

You “interviewed” Ghislaine Maxwell, Todd. You sat down with Epstein’s co-conspirator, the woman who groomed and trafficked children for the most infamous predator in modern American history, and then you moved her to a minimum security camp. And when they needed someone to go on Fox News and explain it — when Bondi had gotten so radioactive they wouldn’t let her near a camera — they sent you. The clean one. The composed one. The one with the face like a man enduring something he cannot name in a public place.

You’re overseeing all of it. Just sitting there on top of all of it. Perfectly still. Completely impacted.

Bondi is gone now. The woman who, per her own colleagues, degraded DOJ’s independence more than anyone in 155 years — gone. And you’re holding the bag alone now, unconfirmed, un-nominated, running the whole rotten operation on a provisional basis while Trump plays golf and contemplates whether Lee Zeldin might want your job.

It’s worth noting that your father’s church got cited for a zoning violation and lost in the Colorado Supreme Court. The whole family packed up and drove to Florida. You were thirteen. I am not saying that was your fault.

I am saying that the first institution that bore your family’s name couldn’t survive its own ethical corner-cutting either, and the apple, Todd — the apple has not fallen far. The apple has not fallen at all. The apple is still up in the tree, weeks overdue, hardened past the point of use, waiting for a process that isn’t coming.

Get help, Todd.

Not legal help. Not PR help.

A gastroenterologist. A good one. Someone who works with truly difficult cases, who has seen things, who does not frighten easily, who has the tools and the patience and the protective equipment to go in there and find out what has been building inside your for years and figure out what it’s going to take — medically, spiritually, cosmically — to finally, finally let it go.

I am rooting for you.

I am also rooting against you in every other possible sense.

But on this one specific thing — the thing that’s written all over your face every single time you stand in front of a camera — I’m with you, Todd.

I want you to find peace.

I want you to find relief.

I want you to feel, just once before this is all over, what it’s like to be empty.

Lord knows the Justice Department already is.

Except he couldn’t. Not yet. Not there.

ICE had rules about that.

No hugs at the door. Car searched. No photos. No video. Six months in the swamp, a stroke, a glucose level of 500, a deportation bus that Mexico turned around because even they could see what the United States government had done to this man — and the agents handing him back to his family needed them to drive to a gas station first.

That’s where the first embrace happened. At a gas station at 2am.

That’s what freedom looks like in America in 2026.

“Seeing him step out of the van, so frail and struggling with each step,” Arianne said afterward. “It’s bittersweet because I’m relieved he’s home, yet I’m angry about his condition.”

I flew into Miami Thursday morning. Arianne picked me up and we went to a Cuban breakfast place — just the two of us — while her father was at a mandatory ICE check-in because the government that nearly killed this man in the Everglades wasn’t finished reminding him who holds the leash.

Arianne and I sat across from each other over café con leche and eggs and Cuban toast — tostadas, buttered and pressed, dipped directly into the coffee the way you do in Miami, the way Cubans have always done, a ritual that predates every border and every detention facility and every administration that has ever tried to decide who belongs here and who doesn’t.

The coffee was strong and sweet. The morning was already hot.

Justo Betancourt had been shackled up to 23 hours a day. He had watched other men get pepper-sprayed. He had signed a document in English he could not read, told it was a routine annual registry.

It wasn't.

Justo had been in detention since October 29th, 2025. Walked into his annual check-in and did not walk out again for over six months.

Justo is a type 2 diabetic. Insulin twice a day to survive. When they took him in and learned this, the response from the people now responsible for his life was seven words:

You can get your insulin in Mexico.

We all spent Thursday afternoon together.

Justo walked slow. His right side trembled. He held his fifteen-month-old granddaughter and loved seeing her — you could see it move through him, that specific joy that doesn’t require language, that six months in detention cannot fully extinguish in a man who has people to come home to.

FRIDAY

Friday morning I stepped outside of Arianne’s house for a cigarette.

I was standing there alone when Arianne came and found me.

She told me what her father had just told her.

He had experienced one or more mini-strokes while inside Alligator Alcatraz.

He hadn’t told her this before. Not in six months. Not once.

He kept it from her to protect her from the heartache.

I’m not going to describe what she looked like when she told me that. Some things don’t belong to journalism. Some things belong only to the people who lived them and the silence that comes after.

I will say this: I understood, standing there with a cigarette in the Florida morning, exactly what six months of fighting for someone looks like when it finally finishes hitting you all at once.

ICE had told Justo they were coming to verify Arianne’s address. Sometime between 7am and 7pm. Friday or possibly the following Monday. A twelve-hour window spread across two possible days — because the government that put an ankle monitor on a 55-year-old stroke survivor with trembling in his right side could not be bothered to be more specific than that.

So they waited. By the door. In the house. The way you do when the people who nearly killed your father still control your father’s movements.

Carolina Peguero from CNN arrived shortly after 2pm and set up in the driveway of the yellow house — folding chairs in the Florida sun, a white umbrella for shade, the old Itasca camper against the fence behind them. Justo sat in the chair and told his story in Spanish and in English to a camera that would carry it further than the United States government would prefer.

Arianne sat next to him and tried to hold it together.

After everything she had learned that morning, standing outside with me in the Florida air, she sat in that driveway and held it together.

After 7pm, we were finally free to leave the house.

There’s an ice cream shop Arianne and her father used to go to when she was a kid. Pink soft serve. Neon lights. The specific, irreplaceable geography of a childhood that belongs only to them.

The three of us went.

I sat with them on that bench in the Florida night and I watched a father and daughter eat ice cream like they did when Arianne was in kindergarten.

I saw love.

I saw happiness.

I am not a sentimental person and I am not given to easy emotion and I have covered enough of this fight to have built up a professional callus around the part of me that used to break more easily.

It broke anyway. I teared up.

SATURDAY

The lines at the clinic were too long.

Justo’s blood sugar was still high. They needed a doctor. The lines were the kind of long that happens when people don't have insurance and the safety net has been dismantled.

We went to get him a phone. Ordinary errands. Normal life. Except his blood sugar wasn't coming down and he was unsteady on his feet and I was watching all of it with the particular helplessness of someone who is a witness and not a doctor and not family and cannot do a single goddamn thing except be present and write it down.

I took a Lyft to the airport at 5pm.

Justo was too unsteady for me to feel good about asking Arianne to drive me there.

Before my ride arrived, we sat together in the yard — me, Justo, Arianne. He reached into his pocket and gave me a bracelet. Orange and black, woven tight from plastic bags — the ones the men inside Alligator Alcatraz repurposed with their own tired hands, because human beings will make something out of nothing if you give them nothing long enough. They make them for each other. They make them because making something is the one thing a cage cannot take from you.

Arianne tied it onto my right wrist.

Justo said thank you.

We hugged.

I took off one of my own bracelets — the one that says RESIST — and gave it to him.

He slid it on.

I got in the Lyft and made my way to the terminal. Florida got smaller out the window of the plane. My sense of sadness did not. I was concerned. I felt helpless. I did not feel good about any of it.

Justo Betancourt was in the emergency room. Slumped over for most of the day. Doctors running tests.

Here is what they are looking for, in plain language, because this moment requires plain language and not a single euphemism:

When a diabetic man's insulin is withheld for six months — when his glucose hits 500, three times the threshold for acute crisis, the level at which organs begin to fail and the body begins consuming itself — the damage doesn't stop when the detention ends. It continues unfolding in the body long after the door opens and the gas station embrace happens and the ice cream melts on the bench outside the shop she used to go to with him when she was in kindergarten.

Justo’s blood vessels are damaged. Narrowed. Scarred. The stroke he survived alone in that swamp — the one he kept secret to protect his daughter — left arterial damage that doesn't heal on its own. Now those compromised vessels are throwing small clots. Mini-strokes. Transient ischemic attacks. Each one a brief interruption of blood flow to the brain. Each one its own small destruction. Each one a foreseeable, documented, medically predictable consequence of months of neglect and indifference.

Sunday was supposed to be different. Sunday was the weekly vigil outside Alligator Alcatraz — more than forty Sundays of people gathering across the highway to pray and sing and refuse to let the people inside be forgotten. Arianne was supposed to be there in person. With her father home. A moment to exhale. A moment to feel, just for one Sunday, like the fight had been worth it.

Instead she called in on speakerphone and told the people praying for her father that he was recovering in a hospital bed.

What should have been a moment of relief became the announcement that it isn't over. That the damage done to Justo Betancourt inside a facility operated by the state of Florida and funded by the United States government does not stop when the van door opens at 2am. Does not stop at the gas station. Does not stop at the ice cream shop or the CNN driveway interview or the clinic with lines too long to wait in.

It does not stop.

People need to be held accountable, Arianne said, when her father was still inside. And that investigation needs to be thorough and as immaculate as it can be.

She was right then.

She is right now.

She is in that hospital room right now, sitting beside a man in a hospital gown with an IV in his arm and a pulse ox on his finger and wires running across the white sheets.

None of this is an accident. This was designed. The medication withheld. The complaint boxes removed. The oversight offices eliminated and called internal adversaries. The inspection reports reduced by 36% as the detained population tripled. The medical payment system shut down while ICE's own internal documents called it an absolute emergency that could cause loss of life.

They knew.

They did it anyway.

This is American sadism. Funded at a billion dollars. Celebrated at press conferences. Defended by a governor who said if we shut the lights out tomorrow, we will be able to say it served its purpose.

It served its purpose.

His daughter is with him.

“I'm not giving up,” she said, several Sundays ago, across the highway from the swamp.

She hasn't.

Neither has Justo’s body.

“I don’t know where it landed,” she said later. “I just blacked out, and then I ran as fast as I could out of the room.”

On the way out, a woman Ferretto identified as Ghislaine Maxwell blocked her path. “This man is important”, Maxwell reportedly told her. “He is a friend of President Clinton. You can’t just leave.”

She stayed silent for fifteen years — too terrified to speak, certain she’d be blackmailed or worse — then came forward in 2019 when Epstein was arrested, gave her name to the New York Post, filed a civil suit, became one of the first women to publicly put her face on this thing.

Now she’s gone.

Vanished.

And the only entity on earth claiming to know where she is won’t say where that is, won’t say why she’s there, and won’t let anyone who might independently verify the claim anywhere near her.

No reported calls. No reported texts. No reported emails. No social media — her accounts were wiped clean like a hard drive before a federal raid. Her elderly mother in Montagnana, Italy, who spoke with her daughter every single day without fail, has not reported hearing her voice in three weeks. Her brother: nothing. Her friends: nothing. No family member, lawyer, journalist, or consular official has publicly reported any direct contact with her since April 22nd.

What we have instead is this: a message, passed through Interpol, passed through the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, passed through the Carabinieri, passed through local officials, that finally reached her family — a message whose origin traces back to whatever American authorities are reportedly holding her.

The message said: she’s fine.

Take a moment. Breathe that in.

The authorities reportedly holding her — who won’t say where, who won’t say why, who didn’t bother to notify Italian consular authorities until Italy sent Interpol after her — want you to know, through a chain of diplomatic telephone tag that would embarrass a third-grade classroom, that everything is totally fine and there is absolutely nothing to see here.

Is she alive?

We don’t know. We genuinely, factually, verifiably do not know. “Florida” is what Italian authorities say they were told through Interpol channels. That’s the sum total of our geographical intelligence on the whereabouts of a human being. An assertion of unknown origin, laundered through an international messaging system, relayed across two continents, landing in the living room of a terrified Italian mother as the closest thing to reassurance anyone can offer.

We have the word of her jailers. We have the assurance of the same administration criticized for releasing inadequately redacted Epstein materials, that withheld half the files Congress legally mandated be released, that fired the Attorney General who was supposed to oversee the Epstein investigation, that has constructed the most opaque immigration detention apparatus in the history of this republic.

Let’s talk about the timing, because the timing is the kind of thing that makes your neck prickle in ways you can’t quite explain to your therapist.

Elisabetta Tai Ferretto disappears April 22nd. This is not a quiet moment in American politics. Three million pages of Epstein documents — released by the DOJ in January 2026 — are still detonating across Washington. The political shrapnel is flying in every direction. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick is sweating through congressional testimony about why he visited Epstein’s island in 2012, couldn’t remember why, brought his wife and kids, stayed for lunch, says nothing untoward happened, take his word for it. Trump’s name appeared more than thirty-eight thousand times in the released Epstein materials. Former AG Pam Bondi — who once took a $25,000 donation from an Epstein-linked foundation while deciding as Florida AG not to join a fraud investigation against him, and who spent months defying congressional subpoenas demanding she explain what happened to the rest of the documents — was fired as Attorney General right in the middle of all of this.

All roads, for reasons that are either deeply significant or the greatest coincidence in the history of American journalism, lead to Florida.

Bondi: Florida AG.

Epstein’s original crimes: Palm Beach, Florida.

The sweetheart deal that let him serve 13 months of an 18-month sentence with work release privileges six days a week: brokered by Florida federal prosecutors.

Elisabetta Tai Ferretto, Epstein accuser, currently detained somewhere, on undisclosed charges, last reported to be in: Florida.

If that’s even true.

Now let’s talk about how Italy “found” her, because this is where the story turns from alarming into something that should have every journalist in America burning through their source lists at three in the morning.

Italy did not find her. Italy received a message saying she was findable.

Interpol — and people misunderstand this constantly — is not a law enforcement agency. It cannot arrest anyone. It cannot independently verify anything. It is, at its operational core, a sophisticated international messaging system. A very expensive, very official group chat for cops.

What happened is this: Italy asked, through Interpol’s channels, where their citizen was. A message came back through that same system — she’s in Florida, she’s fine, stop asking — and we have exactly as much ability to verify that as we do to verify anything else from the authorities reportedly holding her, which is to say none, which is to say we are being asked to trust that a woman who accused their most politically toxic case is alive, healthy, and being held in a specific state they named, in a facility they won’t identify, on charges they won’t disclose.

Interpol relayed the message to the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which told the Carabinieri, which told the family.

No Italian official has sat across from her. No consular visit has been publicly confirmed. No lawyer has been publicly identified as representing her. No journalist — not one, in any country — has independently located any facility and attempted to make contact. No family member has spoken to her. The “good health” assessment exists because the authorities reportedly holding her said so.

This is what passed for a resolution. This is what made her mother say “it’s the end of a nightmare.”

It is not the end of a nightmare. It is a nightmare that has learned to send press releases.

Here are the questions that America’s major media outlets — which have covered this story with all the urgency of a damp sock, leaving the unresolved detention questions almost entirely unexamined — should be screaming from every front page:

Where is she? Not “Florida.” Not “a facility.” Which building? Which city? Which address? Why won’t anyone say, and why isn’t anyone demanding to know?

What are the charges? Someone detained her under some legal authority. That authority has a name. What is it? Why is it secret? Since when do we keep secret the charges against people we’re imprisoning?

Why wasn’t Italy notified immediately? Under the Vienna Convention on Consular Relations — which the United States has signed — when a foreign national is arrested, their consulate must be notified “without delay” if the detainee requests it, and must at minimum be told of that right. Italy found out through Interpol three weeks later, after activating its entire diplomatic apparatus. Whether she requested consular access and was denied, or was never told she could request it, or something else entirely happened — nobody is saying. That silence is its own story.

Has anyone actually seen her? Not “confirmed she exists in a database.” Seen her. Spoken to her. Verified with human eyes and ears that Elisabetta Tai Ferretto is alive, conscious, and capable of confirming her own existence independently of the people who took her?

The American press corps, which dispatched reporters to cover Howard Lutnick’s island lunch in forensic detail, has not asked a single one of these questions out loud.

Virginia Giuffre, Epstein’s most prominent accuser, is dead. She was 41.

Maria Farmer, the first person to report Epstein to the FBI — in 1996, twenty-three years before he was arrested — spent decades in poverty and illness, largely ignored by the institutions she trusted with the truth.

The women who came forward with their real names, who traded their privacy for the slim hope that someone with power might finally give a damn, have paid for it in ways that defy accounting.

And now Elisabetta Tai Ferretto — who survived Ghislaine Maxwell blocking a doorway, who survived fifteen years of silence built from fear, who finally stood up and said this happened to me and here is my name and here is my face — is somewhere. Presumably. According to the people who took her. In a country that considers “she’s fine, trust us” a sufficient answer to an international diplomatic inquiry from an allied nation.

The 21-year-old who escaped that Upper East Side townhouse did so because she refused, in the most visceral and direct way imaginable, to let a powerful man treat her as disposable.

The question — the only question that matters right now — is whether we are going to let them do it anyway.

As of May 16th, 2026: public reporting confirms that Elisabetta Tai Ferretto’s family lost contact with her after April 22nd. Italian authorities later said she had been located in the United States in good health. Multiple reports place her in custody or detention in Florida. The facility has not been named. The legal basis for her detention has not been disclosed. No attorney has been publicly identified as representing her. No consular visit has been publicly confirmed. No family member has reported speaking with her directly.

But the work has stopped.

A stop work order was issued to GardaWorld last week, buried in the federal spending database at USAspending.gov with no explanation attached. No reason given, no timeline for resumption, just a quiet bureaucratic notation that something, somewhere, had gone wrong for the people in charge. And now Axios is reporting what the residents of Surprise had already begun to suspect: DHS is evaluating whether to walk away from the entire warehouse detention program. Not just Surprise. All of it. Twenty-four warehouses across the country, a $38 billion vision of industrial-scale human caging, and the whole apparatus is wobbling.

The federal government blinked.

It didn’t blink because of a court order, though AG Kris Mayes’ lawsuit, filed April 24th, didn’t hurt. It didn’t blink because of a congressional intervention. The Democrats who represent this community sent a strongly-worded letter and called it a day. It didn’t blink because Kevin Sartor grew a spine. It blinked because the people of Surprise, Arizona made it politically, logistically, and legally untenable to do anything else, and none of them fought harder, or more visibly, than a seventeen-year-old kid named Cali Overs.

Cali Overs is a senior at Dysart High School, Student Body Vice President, and approximately one mile from the warehouse as the crow flies. She is also the person who, when the federal government purchased a building in her city to use as a mass detention facility for up to 1,500 human beings, did not wait for an adult to handle it.

She circulated a petition. She showed up to city council meetings. She testified. She organized. And on April 24th, she stood in front of that warehouse next to the Attorney General of Arizona and told the press what it was like to watch her classmates become afraid of their own neighborhood.

“Many students have told me that they’re too scared to go past this area,” Overs said, “and are switching to online classes.”

That’s not a political talking point. That’s a seventeen-year-old describing the specific texture of dread that descends on a community when the government turns a building near your school into a detention center. Not a rumor of one, not a zoning proposal, but a done deal, a $70 million cash purchase executed without a single phone call to local officials, without an environmental review, without so much as a courtesy heads-up to the city council member who found out about it from a reporter.

Dysart High School’s student body is over 60 percent Hispanic. The warehouse is half a mile away. The math is not complicated.

The federal government’s strategy, in Surprise as in every other city where it pulled this move, was speed. Buy fast, contract fast, build fast, and present the community with a fait accompli before anyone could organize a response. It worked in other places. It did not work here.

Community members packed city council meetings from the moment news broke in late January. One meeting drew over a thousand people. They filled the room, spilled into the hallway, stood outside in the parking lot, and made it clear that this was not a controversy that was going to quietly dissipate. Northwest Valley Indivisible worked the attorney general’s office for months, meeting twice with staffers, pushing the legal case. Brent Peak of NWV Indivisible had the particular satisfaction of watching it pay off, though he kept his victory speech characteristically dry.

“An MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) isn’t worth the paper it’s written on,” he said, back when the mayor was still promising written agreements with DHS would solve everything.

The legal architecture that’s boxing DHS in was built in Maryland first. A federal judge there issued a preliminary injunction on April 15th, finding that ICE had not taken the “hard look” at environmental consequences required by the National Environmental Policy Act, and that the agency’s claim to a categorical exclusion from that law didn’t hold up when the project involved converting an industrial warehouse into a facility housing hundreds of people. Arizona AG Mayes pointed directly at that ruling when she filed her own lawsuit nine days later.

The NEPA argument is good. The INA argument, that the Surprise facility is not and will never be an “appropriate” place to detain human beings, as the law requires, is arguably better. The warehouse is directly across the street from Rinchem, a chemical storage facility handling materials used in semiconductor production. The hazmat warnings are visible from the road. Mayes stood in front of them at her press conference and gestured at two large chemical tankers idling at the curb like props that the government itself had helpfully provided.

“Let this sink in,” she said. “The federal government wants to open a jail inside a documented chemical hazard zone.”

ICE’s response was to say this wasn’t really about the environment.

Which is technically true.

It’s about a lot of things.

It’s about a government that bought a warehouse without telling the city. It’s about students switching to online school. It’s about what happens when you try to build a machine that processes human beings at industrial scale and you forget that the human beings aren’t the only ones with something to say about it.

None of this is over. The warehouse is still there. The contract is still on the books. DHS has not officially announced it’s abandoning the project, only that it’s “paused” and “evaluating.” The federal government has a long history of pausing things and then quietly resuming them once attention drifts elsewhere. The lawsuit is still working its way through the courts. The stop work order has no stated expiration.

But something has shifted.

The broader warehouse detention program, all 24 facilities, the entire $38 billion architecture of it, is now described by sources close to DHS as a plan under review, with discussions underway about selling properties back. CoreCivic, one of the country’s largest private prison operators, is in talks to sell the agency “turnkey” facilities instead. Existing detention infrastructure, already built for the purpose, no retrofitting required. The warehouse gambit, the whole audacious vision of converting America’s surplus industrial real estate into a nationwide detention network, appears to be failing on the merits.

"We do not fight absurdity with valor," he told the Boston Globe from a recording studio couch, drinking a Shirley Temple and two orange sodas in succession to force function. "We fight it with more absurdity."
