Schumer doesn't need to get his marshmallow elbows up - he needs to get on down the road. What more timely proof that the D's have entered a new era than for him to position himself in the rear-view mirror? Thanks for your years of service - and see ya!
I think Schumer did the right thing. I think he weighed the alternatives and made a bitter choice. He knew that Trump et al wanted a government shutdown, because they said so, and because if there is no budget to tell them what they must fund and what they can't fund, then they can do whatever they want, and they would have.
And I think he will get even. If he can. But if you are calling for his replacement, whom do you have in mind and why, just to punish him? Do you know the battlefield as well as Schumer and Pelosi?
I know that Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi is more savvy than any of us about the way to assess the situation and the ramifications, and she stated clearly that Schumer should have fought. What fight was possible? That fight means Schumer would have had to have had a team willing to filibuster night and day and night until. . .until what? Until the GOP Senators relented? The GOP Senators have enough votes to call cloture. It's a losing game.
The GOP need to be made more afraid of the voters than they are of Trump. And how does that happen? The voters have to recall them. Just shouting at them in town halls does nothing. They go back to the Senate and continue their program. Their neighborhood is the Senate, not their voters.
I think what we really see is that the Democratic Party is deeply divided in the rank and file (that's us), mostly ignorant about how things work in Congress, and in the elected representatives. I think this is what we need to address.
I think we need a team of leaders right now, Congressman Jared Huffman, Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, Senator Mark Kelly, U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren, to barnstorm the United States, and hold town halls via zoom and in person.
And I think they should say to the people "You are shouting at us that you can't stand higher prices. You are shouting that you need Medicare, and Social Security, and Veterans' assistance. You are telling us and telling us that we need to work for our citizens getting left behind while prices rise and rich people get tax breaks.
And we hear you. And we have to ask you now if you want us to do one thing, and that is Tax The Rich. Yes or no? "
Then introduce the candidates for the district at issue, candidates who will say "You know me. You know where I live and how I vote. If you send me to Congress I will go there with your demand. Tax The Rich. And that's what I will work to do."
I think we do NOT need to worry right now about who is going to be our presidential candidate 4 years from now and we do NOT need to worry about getting primaried from the right. This is the leading the people demand now.
We do not have an informed voting populace. We have voters who tune in to Fux, and Joe Rogan, and Ben Shapiro, and the rest of the fact-free resentment sellers. We do not train our kids or our adults in critical thinking, the way the Finns do. Our public education is shameful. So in the absence of one or more compelling, 24/7/365 factual and charismatic media outlets, we must convene media savvy cadres to address this battlefield weakness.
Otherwise, we are going to right on being demonized as the enemy by Fux and friends when the enemy is exploitive capitalism. But we have college educations so we must be the bad guys.
Better yet, Senator Schumer, it's time for you to step down
Mitchell wouldn't have done this
Reed wouldn't have done this
Step down - step aside - let the younger folks who are willing to fight have their day
Time to unleash the dogs of war!
We saw what happened to the end of the Biden era
You don't want that for a legacy, do you?
Of course not.
As the good Senator from my next-door neighboring state of Oregon, Jeff Merkely said, the best time to tackle a dictator is in the very early days
We are in those very early days
Keep in mind that 47 & his drug lord lackey & the GOP have done more damage in 2 almost months than other dictators have managed in years' time.
Step down & let others regain the trust and take-back of our democracy before it's all gone
By 2026 it will be all over except for the memories. Sen. Schumer, step down now and maybe save democracy.
I'm reminded of a book: How We Survived Communism & Even Laughed

I'm a Fan Girl of Oregon Senator Jeff.
He did a great interview with Jim Acosta a month of so ago at the Boston Ted Kennedy Center
Very Well Said!!!
Schumer is a TRAITOR.

Now is late. Not getting sooner.
