At the end--or really, a couple of years before the end, Cheney seemed to do an about face; voting for Harris, declaring that Trump was not really a nice guy, etc. etc. He had a kind of political/religious conversion-- maybe he didn't like the way the Republicans/Trump treated his daughter, maybe some light found it's way into to the dark, nasty room in which he lived... Who knows?

But I wonder, did Cheney ever publicly apologize for his crimes? A real live, out-there, in-public, apology for all the scheming and lying and deaths and torture that could be laid right at his doorstep... Apologize for strong-arming the CIA into altering their reports to show that Saddam had "weapons of mass destruction"--(thus giving his dimwit boss, and his old pals at Haliburton, a reason to invade; And, apologize for the Iraq war and secret prisons and torture and violations of law and decency that were an essential element in creating Trump's twisted dictatorship...

Cheney was a scheming, murderous, lying human being-- and though it's generally not a good thing to speak ill of the dead, he was one those exceptions where ill-speaking is the only karmic option... His redemption needed to be BIBLICAL... What he needed to do--if he had any real intention of saving his putrid old soul--was go over to Iraq, strip himself naked, kneel down in a public square in Baghdad and say he was sincerely sorry to every human being that passed by--until his voice gave out and what remained of him swept away in the hot wind...

I wonder if they worry about they'll be seen by posterity. They seem very grasping and short-sighted to me...

How many deaths was this war criminal responsible for, we’ll never know… we’ve seen the evil that resides in guys like him before, he should have died in an oubliette for his crimes, thankfully we can hope that death seeks and finds a more cretinous wastrel in this epoch!

Great post, thanks for sharing!

I gotta say, I wonder if the commenter's criticizing you were around when Cheney was in office. I was, and I hated him. He was an evil man then. I didn't hate him like I do Trump now, but he was for torture at the time. I'm glad he changed, for himself, but Cheney did alot of damage as you pointed out. You told the truth. And you pointed out the change. No point in being a hypocrite. Too many hypocrites. Truth is better. So I thank you for your article.

The man who had a President as a hand puppet. Who made hyper profits from torture and human misery.

Who was a key enabler of the current GOP cancer which is eating your precious Democracy alive.

Let us also not forget that the war on the Taliban also allowed opium production to skyrocket in 2001 (it was banned in 2000 for religious reasons) opening the door for US based pharmaceutical companies (Sacklers) to take advantage of a huge market. Where did all that opium come from during the US drug crisis? The military was shipping it back to the US in the coffins of dead soldiers. Who profited from this? Take a look at the stock investments of US politicians.

Thanks for this clear eyed history about Cheney. Even though he did change at the end, I remember his actions as VP and his making money with Hallibuton, his encouragement to hunt for WO mass destruction when none were found, and his torture OK actions re: Guantanemo. It won't be the fact that he had a change of heart that will be his legacy, as you stated, and GOP, Johnson, Trump's cabinet, and all his asskissers should remember this and think about their own legacy they will leave behind. They should have the change of heart now, when they can still have an effect. Save their own souls and forget about Trump's. He'd forget about you in a heartbeat, GOP, and you know it.

I love your work, I loved this column and I don’t think any apology is necessary for telling the truth, even if that truth makes some feel a bit ‘sweaty’.

It won't surprise me if Trump and the Republicans offer him a state funeral with a viewing In the rotunda! But maybe Trump will forget and have him laid out in the former East Wing oh excuse me! That $350 million dollar BR!
