An Open Letter to GOP Senators
Dear GOP Senators,
Today is the deadline. Not tomorrow, not “this week” — today, July 27, 2026, Temporary Protected Status ends for 350,000 Haitians who have lived here for over a decade, worked here, raised American-citizen kids here. Whatever window existed to act ahead of this moment is closing as you read this.
You don’t have to agree with every immigration policy in this country to vote for this bill. That’s not what’s being asked of you. Temporary Protected Status was never amnesty and never a path around the law — it was built by Congress in 1990, signed by a Republican president, on the plain premise that the United States doesn’t force people back into collapsed states just because paperwork expires. Haiti today has no functioning government in large parts of the country. Gangs control nearly all of Port-au-Prince, now ranked the most dangerous capital city in the world. The U.S. State Department’s own travel advisory says do not go.
Deportation to Haiti isn’t just returning someone to general instability — deportees face a documented, specific danger on top of it. Human rights researchers and advocates working directly with returnees report deportees are targeted precisely because they’re identified as deportees: surveillance, extortion, kidnapping for ransom, forced recruitment into gangs, and in the worst documented cases, killed. One man deported after living in the U.S. since childhood put it plainly: he stays inside because “everything is a threat.” That’s not rhetoric. That’s what today’s inaction directly produces.
These aren’t people who crossed illegally seeking a loophole. TPS holders are here through a legal, congressionally-created process. They pay into Social Security and Medicare, they staff the hospitals, farms, and construction crews in your own state. The House already passed the companion bill in April with Republican votes — this isn’t a fringe ask, it’s already a bipartisan position in the other chamber.
Passing S.4814 even now, today, still matters — it can restore status that lapses today, it isn’t rendered pointless by the clock running out. There is no later version of this that costs you less.
And we are not waiting quietly on your answer. Right now, we are telling every person who reads this to call the Capitol switchboard at (202) 224-3121, ask for their senator by name, and say: “I’m calling to ask Senator [name] to cosponsor and pass S.4814 to protect Haitian TPS holders.” We are telling them to call today, call tomorrow, and keep calling until this is resolved. Every office that hasn’t cosponsored should expect that volume, and should know it will not stop when today ends.

Your heartbreaking quest forced me to learn more about TPA. Not surprisingly, the current description is so vanilla, so false: "Temporary Protected Status (TPS)—frequently referenced as TPA—is ending because the administration maintains the program was always meant to be temporary, citing that conditions in designated nations like Haiti and Syria have improved, and a June 2026 Supreme Court ruling cleared the executive branch to terminate these protections without judicial review." While the decision is heartless and criminal, as you have noted, it is also false. I suggest our President and members of his Repulsive Party book a trip to Haiti. They can use airline points to eliminate taxpayer expensve. Leave bodyguards at home. They need a break. Then the group should stroll along, Haiti's streets and in their generosity, hug a few gang members. Alas, when the group returns to America, they may not be able to get medical care: hospital staff has somehow disappeared.
