It sounds like something from a bad SNL sketch written by a libertarian intern: a Norwegian tourist arrives in America, gets pulled aside by border agents, and is deported for having a goofy meme of the Vice President on his phone.
If you're traveling (in or out of the U.S.), or going to a protest or any place that seems questionable, disable facial or fingerprint unlock on all devices you're carrying. They can't make you give them your passcode. Don't talk. Ask if you're being detained and if not, leave (if you can, of course). Ask for a lawyer. Oh, and if you're outside the U.S. and are thinking about traveling to the U.S. -- don't.
They can't make you give them your passcode, but they can then confiscate your phone for forensic analysis and put you through all the same indignities that he suffered. And if you're not a citizen they'll just refuse entry.
After being shocked and angry, my mind went to the whole National Park thing and how part of the administration wants to auction them off apparently, so maybe they’re trying to discourage visitors to the parks, cut down on the tourist Trade income, to justify selling! I know that’s an overreach, but if I thought of it, I can imagine some of those people thought of it.
I have been hearing more and more stories like this. I recently heard about Canadians being asked 4 questions at the border to enter the US. One of the questions is what do you think of the President?
This has me concerned, as I am a loudmouth anti-fascist American who is going to Canada this summer by car. I do have to re-enter the U.S. at some point...
They have a surveillance system. Remember palinter company is in the white house getting govt contracts. Musk had a hand in it too. They wanna scare us but we can't allow that to happen! We can't bend the knee, kiss the ring, or capitulate! We have the right to speak out, protest peacefully. Remember, democracy dies in silence! Stand strong & together ❤️
I feel so bad about this guy. What will happen to us with all we have on our phones? They must be held accountable for this ridiculous Ice lock em up or deport them stuff.
My concern is where are all these thugs in border control, ICE, etc coming from? Were most of these goons in these agencies insecure little bullies long before this regime, only now they are turned loose and emboldened? None of these folks personally know Trump or any fascist politicians - so who are they answering to, and why are they allowing this to happen and even participating? The stench of rotten corruption must have been there all along. I guess there is no fear of repercussions in these lines of work anymore, and they are now free to be willing enablers. How do we combat the depth of corruption and bully behavior within our security and policing institutions? Scary times.
Of course we don't know who they are since their faces are covered and they don't have insignia. I'm voting for their being January 6 scum. I saw one video (which of course I can't find) where they just looked like gun lovin' bros, wearing shorts and carrying AK47s over their shoulders which is a WAY illegal and unsafe way to hold a gun. ICE agents must get some sort of training and these jerks look like they had none.
Nate Freed Wessler, a lawyer at the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), told the Guardian that after landing on an international flight but before clearing customs, you have fewer civil rights than you do elsewhere in the U.S. “The normal Fourth Amendment requirement of a warrant or individualized suspicion doesn’t apply,” he said. “The only minimal protection CBP has in their policy is distinguishing between manual and forensic searches,” he added, explaining that a forensic search of a mobile phone, for example, involves plugging it into another device to analyze it, while a manual search includes scrolling through its contents. “For a forensic search, they say they need reasonable suspicion, but they don’t define what that means. For a manual search, there are no guardrails. They argue it’s less invasive, but that’s just not true. They can still do keyword searches and spend hours combing through your device.”
That is fucking AWFUL!!! damn. I want to help him but I don't think there's any way to do it. He's exhausted and he also spent a bunch of $$ getting here. damn.

They took a blood sample?!?! HELL NO.
UGH this is insane. I'd lose my damn mind if they treated me like that. Fuck CPB and the horse they rode in on. They can kiss my grits.
Always bring a burner.

damn.
Why did they stop him in the first place if the meme had to be seen in his phone after he unlocked it?

I think after the treatment he got, he just decided to go back to his nice home and not come here anymore. I don’t blame him!
It's a very slippery slope you're on over there
