I was really young, maybe 4 when I first met my great grandmother. And she was really old and was confined to bed care. My grandmother, her daughter, was a nurse and she was her caretaker. But I have very vivid memories of her.
And my grandmother, (who obviously was 1/2 Cherokee), was well known in the community because she was a nurse at the local hospital. She would take my brother and me to the reservation all the time. Such poverty.
I’m currently living in Arizona where there are still several indigenous tribal communities. SUCH POVERTY. They’ve been treated horribly, stripped of their cultures, their ceremonies, their identities.
Several years ago I was introduced to a group of indigenous women who travel around the world to educate people about the philosophies of their various cultures. They call themselves the 13 Grandmothers.
One of them is a tribal elder of the Hopi tribe, Mona Polacca, who lives up in the grand canyon area. I’ve been following them for several years.
And I had the great pleasure and joy of meeting them all in a small venue with about 30-40 other attendees. They shared their stories, their experiences, their challenges, their vision as a group. They also told stories, sang songs, danced. I cried all the way through it.
I’ve also done sweat lodges and other sacred rituals with them.
So great to hear they are keeping stories & traditions alive. My family history is quite different from yours, and theirs. The different branches of my family tree all wound up in North Texas during the Indian Removal Act of the 1830s. Instead of going to the Indian territory in what’s now Oklahoma, they all chose to go to Texas before it became a state.
And the Native Americans came from Asia across the land bridge so while we are all descended from migrational groups ( mine include Swedish, Irish, German, French, miscellaneous). Most of us came through a process gate.(think Ellis Island.) which operated under special criteria, including health, prospects, existing family, already, citizens, etc.)
The special status was set up to deal with natural disasters and man-made disasters, and was therefore “temporary”. Expectations that it was permanent our unfortunate therefore.
South Americans can out work the average American any day of the week. Look at Americans and how fat and disgusting they are. Probably 40% of them have diabetes because they eat like filthy pigs because they are filthy pigs. They don’t have the physical strength or the stamina to do hard labor.
