It's written in our constitution. It's written in the declaration of independence. It's written in the bill of rights. It's carved into the base of the statue of liberty.
America used to stand for u, something important. Something special.
It can again. I want to live in an America that stands for something. It starts with us, standing for something right now. Standing against this totalitarian ideology.
We are the people—unbroken, unyielding, and unafraid. We are the revolution, the voice they cannot silence, the fire they cannot extinguish. We are the true patriots, standing not for tyranny, but for justice; not for hatred, but for liberation. We will not stand down. We will not be silenced. We will rise, resist, and reclaim our future. Fascism will fall because we refuse to kneel. Our solidarity is our strength, and our defiance is our destiny.
There’s a slight complication. The “Nation we believe in” was also an imaginary place, one promulgated in schools and on TV throughout our upbringing. One that ignored the truth that we have always been a lot more complicated. That the Washington institutions had a lot of waste but also a lot of good. We probably were not aware that belief is necessary for the good to happen. Belief in the power of the institutions, especially by those working within the system, was necessary in order for them to actually function.
Once the door is open, once the other side of the coin has been seen, it may be hard to go back. Back to a time when we were willing to pay for basic dignity for our poor, to fund basic science for our unknown future benefit, to pay forward into the “system” is such a long range way of thinking. But our electorate are not long range thinkers. They don’t even save for retirement.
Sad but true. I would only say that every era, every generation experiences an upheaval of some kind and this hijacking of our federal government is likely to be the one for this era. Furthermore, the upheaval appears to be a reaction to the disillusionment that the MAGA faithful are experiencing with exactly the kind of propagandistic rhetoric that was prevalent throughout our upbringing back in the mid twentieth century. We really can’t blame them for being disillusioned, we are also but their reaction to it has become toxic to the institutions and ideals that we, as liberals, have cherished for decades. I’d like to say that we can bridge this gap in our world view by reaching out and welcoming those on the other side to our liberal way of thinking, however the MAGA movement has become so deeply dug in, thanks largely to a horde of bad actors in places like Russia and China and N. Korea, that we can no longer have any meaningful exchange of ideas with our MAGA counterparts. I’m just wondering if there is still enough time for us to salvage our democratic tripartite republic from the ruins and rubble left behind in the wake of Musk, Trump and DOGE. I believe that time is running out, the clock is ticking and we are still trying to settle a score. Is it better to accuse the Republicans of conspiring to destroy America or should we instead just ignore them and focus on fighting for what we know is good and righteous in the world? Each of us must answer this question on our own terms before we can come together and start talking about solutions. I hope we’re not too late.
This is 100% spot on!! I just wonder if spending our time focusing on these types of pathologically self sabotaging “voters” has any worth? No questioning the piece and its accuracy of opinion! Wouldn’t it be better to focus on those who didn’t vote? What about those low information voters who allowed themselves to be lied to? I think if we knew people like these, we’d be much more effective discussing the talking points found in this great article with them, as opposed to wasting your valuable time and precious sanity trying to convince a brainwashed MAGA type. Finally. Let’s not forget that we liberals must be the driving force behind building a new system of representation in where we don’t elect multi millionaires and billionaires to represent us any longer!!

Bravo!
WOWZER! (I had to stop midway to take a breather.) ROAR is right.
Absolutely outstanding!
And can we now preach the Good Nation we want to be? We all need to hear the story of the nation we believe in. This is the moment.

Excellent writing. Very powerful.

This is amazing and so accurate.
Because the Libs are smart, educated, kind and generous signed a Lib.
This just really spoke to me - thank you!!
Sadly, as their choice turn against them they’ll cry and blame the libs. They’re a pitiful lot.
Powerful
“And you want everyone else to feel just as hopeless as you do.”
This is where from Vance’s comment on Cat Ladies comes. His whole hillbilly life has been miserable and he wants to make others miserable too.
Trump’s relationship with his toilet cleaning demented mom was equally miserable. They are just plain losers!
We need to get our country back and soon…before we slide into inaction.
