NO MERCY
The Death of Decency
She was pulled over earlier this year on January 3rd.
Not after a crime spree. Not after a raid. Not after hurting anyone. She was driving her husband’s car on Maryland’s Eastern Shore. That was enough. ICE took her anyway.
Her name is Arlit Martinez-Carrada. She has lived in the United States since 2004. More than twenty years. No criminal record. Three children at home. One child dying.
Her son, Kevin, was fifteen years old. A U.S. citizen. He was losing a fight with cancer. Everyone involved knew this. Doctors knew it. Lawyers knew it. ICE knew it. Time was already collapsing.
The day after she was detained, Kevin’s condition worsened. His oncologist warned he might not survive the day. His mother was in federal custody.
She was moved. Processed. Logged. Delayed. Treated like paperwork with a pulse.
Kevin held on long enough for hope to flicker. Not long enough for mercy.
His mother learned of his death while sitting in detention, separated by glass. No embrace. No last touch. No whispered goodbye. She cried into a roll of toilet paper because that was what the system provided. That was the accommodation for maternal grief.
After she was told her child had died, ICE transferred her. No pause. No mercy. Just paperwork and a new facility number.
Her lawyers couldn’t find her at first. Her family waited. Her surviving children waited. She was eventually located in Delaney Hall, a detention center with a recent death, a long list of protests, and a reputation built on despair.
Her son’s funeral approached. It took a small army to get her released long enough to attend. Lawyers across states. Community pressure. A U.S. senator intervening just to make sure a mother could stand at her child’s grave.
She made it. Barely.
And now she plans to leave the country.
This is the part they’ll call “self-deportation,” as if this were a serene personal choice made during yoga and reflection. As if grief didn’t have a gun to its head.
She is wearing an ankle monitor. She faces court dates. Check-ins. Surveillance. She has been taught, very clearly, what staying costs.
The government says she entered illegally four times. They say this with capital letters and a tone that suggests arithmetic replaces morality. They say it as if it explains everything. As if numbers absolve cruelty. As if twenty years of life vanish because a spreadsheet says so.
Her children are U.S. citizens. They are sixteen, twelve, and nine. They will grow up knowing exactly where their country stood when their brother died.
Kevin’s obituary does not mention immigration law. It mentions his mother’s cooking. Pozole. Tamales. Soups that tasted like home. It calls her beloved. The heart of the family. The matriarch.
That’s what was deemed expendable.
This is what enforcement looks like when empathy is treated as a weakness and family unity is a slogan meant for campaigns, not detention rooms. This is what happens when the state decides deterrence matters more than bedside goodbyes.
A child died without his mother.
A mother was told through glass.
And the system kept moving, because it always does.

Unspeakable cruelty masquerading as care 😡😡😡😡
I really hate hitting the “like” button on a post that angers me so much, because of the cruelty of this asshole regime (AKA Trumpublicans). This mother being treated the way she was is not only wrong, it’s another broken promise that only the ‘worst of the worst’ would be targeted by ICE and Border Patrol. You know, rapists and murderers. Well it turns out she wasn’t in either of those categories. You know who is? Our President. Fucking Donald Trump. The embodiment of The Anti-Christ. The crook who got the Big, Beautiful Bill (oxymoron) so ICE & BP could be a prime example of ‘Waste, Fraud, & Abuse’ of taxpayers. So Kristi Noem could be in The Mile High Club everyday with her husband. No, she cheated on him with Cory Lewendowsky, the grifting extortionist of government contract bidding. I’m not one for wishing my life away, like a kid who can’t wait for his next birthday, but I am SO looking forward to the midterms to absolutely crush this openly depraved criminal enterprise known as the Republicans. It’s an outright embarrassment to see the fealty given to this evil man is at the top of our government. Fuck MAGA, Fuck GOP, and Fuck YOU if you don’t see anything wrong with DJT’s behavior.
