Criticism is not equivalence. But neither is opposition enough. If a party consistently fails to challenge concentrated wealth, endless war, corporate power, surveillance, and economic inequality, then pointing out that they are not quite as bad as their opponents does not absolve them of responsibility.
I know that some folks who use the phrase ‘both sides’ in this way are really referring to the cowardice and myopia of UpChuck Schumer & Hakeem ‘Weak Sauce’ Jeffries, or maybe the necessarily implied idiocy of the DNC in the wake of their inane ‘24 autopsy that was released recently.
But when they equivocate Zohran Mamdani or Medicare-For-All with right winger assholes, we’ve got a case of learned helplessness.
Seriously, ‘both sides are the same’, ‘there’s no good candidates’, or ‘my vote won’t matter’ is ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALL-Fucking-ways what I hear from eligible nonvoters.
All of that said, I think Hakeem Jeffries should buy a stock of sugar-free, low sodium ketchup…
..and then put his face on them to sell as ‘Weak Sauce’.
People over parties helps to cure that. We should always be getting to know the people around us, and our candidates, alike. Not all rich and powerful people are corrupt, but money and power do more than often corrupt people. Discernment is key, people should start exercising it more instead of blindly following any one person or party.
My dear friend falls into this camp. When anyone mentions an atrocity, it’s met with equal atrocity. THIS puts words to how I’ve been feeling about it, like yeah everyone sucks but like… let’s go DO something about it. Don’t allow the failures on both sides to neutralize each other. Recognize that we are losing our rights. Don’t brush it off as “well that’s how it is no matter who’s in office” like, ok and that’s not a pass!
Whew. Guess I’ve been struggling on how to explain that, I had to get it off my chest. Thanks for doing it so well.
This administration's evil has shown me that they intend to change the emotional atmosphere of this nation into something joyless, depressed, and dying. Blue Meaniestan.
Foreign and corporate money is the problem. Democrats have one simple action they could perform that would save the party. Renounce corporate and foreign money. They have not, and none are seriously talking about a party-wide movement to do so. I will vote for the less hateful, unless I am swept up before I can. But it's hard to be enthusiastic for this party. I'm a culturally Jewish Michigan Michigander. I have Muslim friends who voted for Trump. It's still depressing to think about.
Yes, support politicians who support the people and peace. But the leadership of both major parties are all corporate owned warmongering genociders with no respect for human (or any) life. Yes vote, but don't let party affiliation determine who you vote for. That is not enough.
There is no comfort in both sides and they are not the same thing. It's propaganda, isn't it? People getting beaten and pepper-sprayed by ICE, the felons personal guards, are the heroes today and thank you for listing those who take their nerves to the door. Shame to those who voted and continue to support the felon.
Which Democratic governor? (Wink wink). Agree, criticism deserved. We've been here before...CA, IL, OR, MINNEAPOLIS. They didn't use their law enforcement against protesters in a knee jerk reaction.
There rarely is a “both sides” moment. Almost always there is a “right side” which may be, likely is, neither of the two sides presented, and which frequently, normally, requires courage to choose.
We’ve lost our way in regard to finding the “right answers”, maybe because we have confused “right” with conservatism.
I just keep waiting for it to get so bad, and that day is coming, that someone steps forward with a “new New Deal” that the public recognizes and gets behind.
Why are the Detention Center Operations not arrested, prosecuted and convicted for blocking official Congressional oversight?
Because we have a captured Department of Justice that will not prosecute.
100%

Thank you for highlighting the heros!

Spot on, and diagnoses a prevalent danger in all western democracies.
Especially in those where voting is not compulsory!
